11.16.15 | if only it were that easy. but thanks for the feedback snox |
SharkTooth
11.16.15 | title track needs rhythm bass or something dude, it contains a lot of empty space in them that need to be filled up otherwise you album just has a strangely empty feel that I don't think you're going for tbh |
climactic
11.16.15 | classic garageband drums |
tempest--
11.16.15 | sounds like those "8-bit covers" of metal songs you see on youtube which are just some lame gimmick
i understand doing this programming for writing demos and stuff but yeah it really needs to be recorded with actual instruments to sound good
unless your idea is for the MIDI sound then i guess good work but personally i am not really a fan |
SharkTooth
11.16.15 | that too tbh
Get Fl Studio |
Insurrection
11.16.15 | well technically it is a demo but yea unfortunately the sounds cant get much better electronically. also none of this is garageband |
Insurrection
11.16.15 | fair enough. thanks for giving it a shot |
Insurrection
11.16.15 | by the way, if youre just gonna give one track a shot i recommend the closer. pretty happy with that one |

Beardog
11.16.15 | Yeah, like I said the instruments sound fckin awful but if you use the plugins I told you about you can really improve the sound, it will still sound like shit but a lot better than this. Musically this is great though! I wish I had a band too perform my songs as well... |
Insurrection
11.17.15 | were you the one who rec'd guitar rig? cause that's what i used
also if you guys can share your favorite/least favorite tracks that would be really helpful |
Beardog
11.17.15 | I've listened to the songs on soundcloud but they still sound the same as before i rec'd guitar rig |
Insurrection
11.18.15 | idk, i mean the free stuff on there doesnt make THAT much of a difference. i can send you a .mp3 of how it sounded before to compare cause i did notice the tone sounds a little fuller especially on inquisitor |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.18.15 | "Ive been sitting on some of these tracks for 7 years"
im sorry but u expect us to listen to songs you made when you were 12 years old? |
Insurrection
11.18.15 | *15, and you don't have to if you don't want to
but you should |
AtomicWaste
11.18.15 | I liked "Awakening" as is - didn't feel that it required a rhythmic complement as mentioned above. It's the most organic sounding so far. I think in general, the musical composition is good, but the midi sound is definitely overbearing and just makes everything sound kind of rubbery. If you could translate this to real (or more realistic) sounds, I think you'd have something nice.
Definite props for composing. You might make some adjustments as you translate to real instruments, but the bones are solid, and that's really the tough, creative work. The rest is just execution. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.19.15 | is this garageband |
ScuroFantasma
11.19.15 | @Atomic he was referring to the title track, as in the track called 'The Defeatist'.
And yeah this sounds really sterile from the midi but the ideas are solid. Desperately needs to be recorded on real instruments though but it's pretty cool. |
Beardog
11.19.15 | @Ins that isn't really needed. What I recommend is using the drum kit and electric guitar that come with Kontakt 5 and then run that guitar through Guitar Rig and figure out a good way to make it metal. I'm willing to help you with all this, You didn't use Garageband I thought, although the instruments really sound like the ones Garageband uses... If you use Garageband you could just send the .band files to me |
XingKing
11.19.15 | Jamming now. I write all of my stuff in midi prior to properly recording it, so no fucks given that this is midi |
Beardog
11.19.15 | I still kind of see my songs as demo's but I'm still mixing & mastering the MIDI sounds... If I ever have the time, money & talent(ed people) I would obviously record my whole album with real instruments |
Insurrection
11.19.15 | i use logic actually, and how do you mean run the guitar from kontakt to guitar rig? i was just using it as a plugin to replace the default logic guitar amp
and thanks for the feedback atomic |

11.19.15 | Intro - No real opinion. It's lead decently into track two but nothing much to say.
Equinox - The keys in the intro are pretty damn cheesy and I could have done without them. The song then shifts into sludgy territory and I'm on board for the rest of the track. Lots of great riffs and ideas here and I really dig that lead work. My third favorite song on the EP.
The Defeatist - The first 1:40 or so of this track is pretty much complete filler. I appreciate the old school vibe it has but it is severely lacking in anything interesting. Some passable riffs come in during the rest of the song after the 1:40ish mark and I do like the DUNDUN-bass part but overall, this track should likely be removed as it offers no real value.
Inquisitor - The first 1:35 of this track is largely the same as the prior. Old school feel, all filler. The riff at 1:35 is pretty cool, although I'm not too fond of root notes and whatnot that you've picked. The rest of the song then repeats the filler and goes back to the cool riff.
Melancholy - If you actually intend to play this song with a classical guitar, I love it. I really like how dark it sounds not only because of the note choices but also the classical guitar. The song gets a little cheesier when the bass (and electric guitars?) kick(s) in but this song is ace. Favorite song on the EP.
Solstice - I have mixed feelings about this track. I really like the more black metal riffs around 1:40 and I dig the classical vibe (an homage to the title, I will assume) but a lot of the tremolo picking and endless double bass is just pointless. I like when the riffs become clean and jazzy, but then the tone shifts and it's jarring as fuck. Everything after the 4:30ish mark feels very unnecessary to the song. Some of these riffs are killer and could be fleshed out into a really great song though, so I'd advice you to think about tightening this track up.
Final View - The intro is very questionable but I enjoy everything about this track starting at the 1:00 mark where it finds it's balls and just keeps going. Great track. Second favorite.
So, none of this is really helpful advice but I did it anyway. Make more songs like tracks 2, 5 and 7 and this would be pretty solid with proper instruments. |

11.19.15 | love the indepth review, xing. you make a lot of great points, really helpful stuff to keep in mind |

11.19.15 | Keep on keepin' on, brother |
Beardog
11.19.15 | What I mean is using the electric guitarplugin from Kontakt 5, and then add Guitar Rig 5 as an amplifier, then choose some cab settings or a pre set and you have a kind of good guitar sound. It's pretty funny how logic has the same instruments as Garageband, or at least sound the same |
cleanpeter
11.19.15 | i'm all for a big sputty circlejerk but my album got literally two comments i mean c'mon guys |

11.19.15 | it would be better if this wasn't trying to imitate metal. It's cool that you out time into composition but if you made the same compositions as 8 bit video game music without the imitation of guitar and metal drums it would be a lot more interesting. Metal is interesting to people for the technical intricacies and if the band is good then emotional intensity, electronic music cannot provide either of those these so it's pretty much lost but good try. |
