09.27.15 The Best Nightwish Albums

The Best Nightwish Albums

Complete and utter ranking of Nightwish studio albums, from best to worst obviously.
1Nightwish
Oceanborn

This one is easy, Oceanborn is not just the best album of Nightwish, but arguably one of the best albums of sympho metal. It is also the first Nightwish album I've heard (lucky me). Everything about Oceanborn is simply great, guitar work, Tarja's powerful singing, symphonic parts and catchy, but not over-the-top songs. Also, with the exception of "Devil and the deep ocean", OB contains no weak song. After a solid debut album, this one is the band at their best, masterpiece than unfortunately still hasn't been topped.
2Nightwish
Dark Passion Play

Although I rarely get attached to any music individuals, I was very displeased to hear of Tarja departure. It simply felt like the heart of the band going away. After I heard the entire album, I realized that both NW and I had the change of heart. DPP is both small and grand in its size, perfectly blending ballads like "Eva" and "Meadows of Heaven" with powerhouses like "Bye bye beautiful". It also contains one the biggest hits of NW career, that of course being "Amaranth". Anette's means of singing and voice is different from Tarja's, and Tuomas had to change NW style a bit, but nevertheless it is a remarkable album.
3Nightwish
Century Child

The beginning of Century Child is one the very best in the recent HM scene. By the end of the "Ever Dream", how can you not be awed? The rest of the album, however, is pretty weak, but the feeling is back with "Beauty of the Beast", so in general, this is very good work from Nightwish, with almost the same sound and style from "Oceanborn".
4Nightwish
Once

I know many fine people that prefer this album over each and every other from NW. I can understand the reason behind it, since its beginning is even stronger than that of "Century Child". By the middle of "Once", you already had a super-cool "Planet Hell", catchy "Nemo" (quite possibly their biggest hit) and tender "Creek Mary's Blood". Still, and yet again, we have not-so-strong second half of the product, with of course exceptional exception in "Ghost Love Score". Now, that's a song for ages!
5Nightwish
Endless Forms Most Beautiful

Perhaps the most polarizing album of them all, this one is the latest edition of their repertoire. I like Floor's work with After Forever, and I honestly think her voice is more suitable for that style, but here it is decent enough. An obvious improvement over penultimate album, this is solid effort, kind of Dark Passion Play repeated, only with fewer good songs. Still, the symphonic part is magnificent.
6Nightwish
Wishmaster

I've always thought of Wishmaster as an overrated piece of work. It is undoubtedly an important part of Nightwish career. It contains maybe the greatest hit of them all, the title track, with a refrain as catchy as it can be. Still, album is simply not great. By the time the title track starts, one can already feel drained by the group's attempt to create something meaningful. On the other hand, "Fantasmic" is a fantastic song, and the main savior of the general feeling about the album.
7Nightwish
Angels Fall First

In order to reach greatness, one must have a start. Not necessarily a kick-start. And this is by no means a good album. It's a mediocre one at best. Still, after the first beats of "Elvenpath" it was already pretty clear that we have a winner group here. HM scenery will never be the same again. Also worth mentioning is the fact that they were merely 20 years old at that time.
8Nightwish
Imaginaerum

I get the idea. It is a themed, concept album, an intriguing story about an old composer in his dying days. It is certainly very dramatic, theatrical and with fine orchestration. How it is then, that this album got out of hand? It is painful to hear perfectly good parts of music without any connection between them. Imaginaerum is sort of soundtrack, and it shows in every step of the way. In other words, without a picture (movie), the atmosphere is just missing. Too bad, because this could have been a thing to remember.
