I can honestly see how interest in these guys' output is on the wane. I probably have a softer spot for Letters Home than most, but even I can admit that, at this point, the sprawling, multi-album-spanning narrative Defeater keeps on crafting is more academically admirable than emotionally engaging. Beauty Behind the Madness
So, the less said about Kiss Land, the better, but if "The Hills" (and its fantastic video) are any indication of the quality of this album overall, I'd say Abel should be back in my good graces very quickly--and if not, I'll be raising Cain. Oh, Genesis puns. We have fun. | | 9 |  | Soilwork
The Ride Majestic
Remember that talk about double-albums before? Well, even if you'd told 15-year-old me, in the throes of his Swedish metal obsession, that Soilwork would not just turn into the most viable, consistent melodeath band this side of Insomnium a decade later, but would also put out a genuinely masterful, consistently interesting two-disc set after losing their lead guitarist, well, he'd probably start by asking who Insomnium was (tell him, "They're Finnish, idiot!"), then probably regard the rest of the statement rather skeptically. Stuff Like That There
Cover albums are pretty much always mixed bags (unless you're Mark Kozelek), but Yo La Tengo seem deep enough into their career that they've earned the right to coast a little now and then. And especially when you're covering the gamut from Hank Williams to The Cure, there's bound to be a least a few dynamic hits among the misses. | |

07.31.15 | I like the thick and dark atmosphere of Abel's work, but a lot of it is a lot of the same. That said, there is a really noticeable difference in style and sound when you compare Kiss Land to his three mix tapes. | PappyMason
07.31.15 | Yeah, I really digged him back during his mixtapes days but I don't really find any replay value in his music. I'm pretty much indifferent to everything he's released since then. The new songs just sound mediocre to me, even his singing. I wish he just tried something new/different. | thecheatisnotdead
07.31.15 | I mostly agree. Kiss Land has a song or two I'll still play, but that's about it. I do often find myself replaying the mixtapes, though, and to me "The Hills" feels more aligned with the vibe I got from those than anything else since. Whether that's just a clever fluke remains to be seen. |
