70s movies

i have a throbber for american cinema of the 70s as of late, and it gravitates towards the scummier aspects
1soundtrack (film)
the warriors

THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (1973)

downbeat, no frills slow burner with robert mitchum as a weary career criminal. peter boyle's also good as usual. bleak as fuck 70s boston provides the backdrop to eddie's wheeling and dealing. hurts like a bastid
2the stooges
raw power

PRIME CUT (1972)

batshit hickoid exploito noir with lee marvin playing an irish mob enforcer and gene hackman as a slaughterhouse operator that drugs and holds women in cattle pens
3bobby beausoleil
lucifer rising

BONE (1972)

wealthy white suburban couple encounters black rapist. pretty weird, underrated little film that doesn't really go where you might expect. yaphet kotto kills it as the title character
4various artists
chains and black exhaust

FAT CITY (1972)

this is a classic. beautiful character study of washed up (stacy keach) and up and coming (jeff bridges) boxers eking out an existence in stockton california.
5thin lizzy
jailbreak

NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER (1980)

alright this came out in '80 but it was filmed in the 70s so i'm including it anyway. cop turned long haul trucker james brolin's daughter gets kidnapped and he has to navigate the mean streets of late 70s NYC to get her back. best thing about this is the depiction of the seediness of the city - some very sleazy characters, desolate shots of wrecked buildings in the bronx etc. otherwise it's a pretty minor film
6johnny moped
cycledelic

THE GAMBLER (1974)

classic 70s grit, with james caan also getting some range outside of his usual pretty one dimensional tough guy roles. plus an ending that'll stick with you
7willie hutch
foxy brown

ROLLING THUNDER (1977)

given its reputation i almost expected a bloodbath from start to finish but was surprised in a good way at how much of a slow burner this is. a lot of the most memorable moments are the low key ones that set up the final stretch. devane in particular is fucking great in the scenes just after he returns home from captivity in vietnam
8skrewdriver
all skrewed up

JOE (1970)

for the longest time i only knew peter boyle as the cabbie awkwardly dispensing advice to travis bickle but i'm running into him more frequently now. great here again as a hater of blacks/hippys/homosexuals/all the things that are hurting america
9john carpenter
assault on precinct 13

COCKFIGHTER (1974)

“frank mansfield walked into town with his cock in his hand..and what he did with it was illegal in 47 states”
10nervous eaters
just head

ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE (1973)

existentialist road movie with some beautiful shots of the arizona desert. RIYL: meat puppets II
11the last poets
the last poets

CRUISING (1980)

can't believe a major studio produced this but holy fuck it's a gem. a killer is targeting gays in new york and a cop (al pacino) goes undercover in the leather bars to to try to attract him. includes such legendary scenes as pacino dancing on poppers in a club. despite some laughable moments the grim atmosphere that pervades this thing really is great. very fitting soundtrack too
12suicide
suicide

OVER THE EDGE (1979)

delinquent teens in suburbia classic starring a very young matt dillon
13the electric eels
god says fuck you

MIKEY AND NICKY (1976)

really loose, rambling gangster movie that takes place over a single night. john cassavetes and peter falk play two old friends and they own this
14various artists
nuggets: original artyfacts

BLUE COLLAR (1978)

the directorial debut of TAXI DRIVER screenwriter paul schrader, this deserves to be better known. richard pryor, harvey keitel and yaphet kotto are three desperate auto factory workers who try to rise above their situation
15sam rivers
crystals

SORCERER (1977)

william friedkin's excellent remake of THE WAGES OF FEAR. a twist of fate leads to a bunch of desperate and disparate characters from around the world all working together to transport nitroglycerin loaded trucks through the dominican jungle. tangerine dream's score rules as well
