05.06.15 | Let the analysis begin. I just want you to be aware of the practical consequences that come from being less generous with ratings.
Take this scenario as an example. Suppose there are two albums by an artist and each has an average of 4.0. You listen to the first and are immediately turned off by the first track, so you skip to the second album. That one is a lot more pleasant, so you sit through the whole thing and conclude that it's a great album. However, you've recently decided to lower your ratings comparative to your absolute favorites, so you give it a mere 3.5 because it's not as good as such and such. In the end, album that you DIDN'T even care to listen to has a higher average than the album you liked.
I think we each would like to promote music we like, and by raising your standards you're only bringing down the stuff you like. |

05.06.15 | I feel like people will never give enough credit to the ratings of 3 and 3.5, personally. |

05.06.15 | 5 Master Of Reality and then you can do whatever you want to |
Cygnatti
05.06.15 | 3.0 = album is good. simple stuff, guys! :] |
Parallels
05.06.15 | I rate the albums based on a critical analysis of the material
A 5 is perfect, every track holds the same flawless quality as the one before it
A 4.5 is basically a 5 and almost flawless but with very minor flaws, like a track or two has a few noticeable off spots
A 4 would be an otherwise amazing album front to back but with a single really bad track, or maybe a few that aren't up to par with their good work
A 3.5 my cutoff for a really good album, but it has very obvious flaws, or about 3 tracks out of 10 that are just awful
A 3 has some solid material but usually ruins it with flaws all over the damn album
A 2.5 is usually equal amounts good material with equal complete shit
A 2 is more bad than good
A 1.5 is really shit with only a few redeeming qualities
A 1 is almost absolute shit with usually only 1 song that I really like
In the case that it would be lower than a 1 and I don't like anything on it then I just won't rate it because I never got into it and it should really be a 0.5 or a 0 but sputnik is stupid and wont let us rate it |
Funeralopolis
05.06.15 | 1-2: pretty awful (example of a very 2 album: Eminem- Recovery)
2.5- has a few good songs, maybe a few catchy hooks but nothing stands out (The Ex- Catch My Shoe)
3- has an identity of its own at least, has an interesting theme it is going for, has at least a few good songs. My go to rating most of the time. (Blue Hawaii- Untogether)
3.5- at least half of the album is pleasant to listen to, has an interesting theme, has standout moments, very few to no terrible songs. May not have great replay value however. (Local Natives Hummingbird)
4- fantastic album, full of creative interesting ideas, compelling and fresh approaches, almost every song is awesome, however may be lacking something that really takes it to the next level. (Deftones- Saturday Night Wrist)
4.5- absolutely amazing album, good diversity, very creative, emotionally impacting, very engaging all the way through probably has some jaw dropping moments. (My Bloody Valentine- Loveless)
5- Absolute masterpiece of the highest caliber, perfect in nearly every way. Contains numerous moments that are extremely engaging and emotionally impacting, fantasic performance by all band members. (Converge- Jane Doe)

Sowing
05.06.15 | I recently redid by ratings and now I give almost everything a 2-3. I've decided I listen to so much music that if I rate something a 3.5 (truly "great") that it means I should know what it is and revisit it over a year later. A 4 must be something truly special that I remember even when I'm not thinking about it. 4.5's are cream of the crop - albums I would take with me if I had to move and could only choose my favorite 25 or 30 or so. 5's are album's I'd take with me to the grave, they're a part of me. |

05.06.15 | >example of a 5 album (Converge- Jane Doe)
Way to sneak that in there. |
PotsyTater
05.06.15 | sound like you are putting way too much weight into an arbitrary task |
Archelirion
05.06.15 | I give way too many 4.5's. Could probably do with a more rigorous restructuring of mine, with 3.5 being the 'base' that I rate everything else around. |
Tunaboy45
05.06.15 | I often can't decide whether to give an album a 3.5 or 4 |
Friday13th
05.06.15 | Yeah I stick to the 4s pretty hard mainly cause I want to err on the generous side. |
grish
05.06.15 | 5 - the album is Sweet Revenge by John Prine |
nakedwesmile
05.06.15 | there's no point in rating how bad a bad/boring album is so for me 2 is the middle point, 1.5 is a piece of music that's lacking in substance and 1 are bad ones. though it doesn't matter bc I can't be bothered to rate on sputnik
It's also better if you put the music in perspective, rate it comparatively to everything else in the genre or even everything you've heard |
titanslayer
05.06.15 | I don't see being generous a bad thing. Sure as I listen to more music my standards go up, so ratings get lower, but I always rate it exactly what I think it deserves even if I might be a little generous. |
Gameofmetal
05.06.15 | Ratings are arbitrary anyway, just rate shit how you feel. |
LunaticSoul
05.06.15 | same
5 is just for the holy trinity that drastically changed my life.
Just bcoz a lot of discs that had a huge impact on music history I couldn't give two fucks and giving 5s out of respect is dumb. |
DoofusWainwright
05.06.15 | Your average rating score should really be somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 to be take seriously I think ;) |
titanslayer
05.06.15 | Who cares about average? That objectivity score is BS. And that's coming from the guy that has one of the highest objectivity scores on the site on the site |
DoofusWainwright
05.06.15 | I was yanking peoples chains, live and let live |
Mort.
05.06.15 | i like a 5 roughly as much as my other 5s
i like a 4.5 roughly as much as my other 4.5s
and so on.
i try not to put much thought into it so it doesnt become tiresome or more important than it really is |
ArsMoriendi
05.06.15 | 5.0 - I will fanboygasm all of the album creating a white sticky mess of bias.
4.5 - I'll fanboy over the album while acknowledging it's minor flaws.
4.0 - I love the album, but it has some really noticeable flaws.
3.5 - A lot of good qualities, but enough shit ones where I can't call it a favorite.
3.0 - Mostly boring, but has a few awesome highlights.
2.5 - Really boring, or polluted by terrible tracks that overshadow the good ones.
2.0 - Mostly terrible tracks with a few redeeming qualities.
1.5 - Basically everything is terrible, but it's not worst of all time material.
1.0 - Fuck this shit and anyone who likes it. |

05.06.15 | literally everyone in this thread takes ratings far too seriously. everyone has a different scheme and its completely arbitrary anyways. |
PotsyTater
05.06.15 | like at the end of the day all that matters is whether or not you like it and what you have to say about it. |
Archelirion
05.06.15 | Don't think I can argue with that Potsy. Good way of looking at it. |
PotsyTater
05.06.15 | yeah man. its nice to be able to keep track of the shit you've listened to etc and see other users tastes etc but other than that its just a capricious system of numbers. |

Nearly everyone is saying that ratings aren't a big deal |

05.07.15 | wow, I really sparked a discussion |
Valkyrion
05.07.15 | having a low scoring system really makes you understand what stuff you actually consider amazing. I also find profiles of people with lower scores more helpful for finding interesting music / discerning music taste, since if said person awards an album with a high score it has far more weight than somebody who rates everything a 4.0 or above
that said you should rate things as you like, it's more of a mental exercise than anything really |
Gestapo
05.07.15 | u feel bad about numbers |
