| Gavin is a Great Dancer Apparently
I decided to rank Dance Gavin Dance now that Instant Gratification leaked/is streaming. I honestly enjoy this band a lot, though I've been trying to listen to them less so I don't get sick of them. But that's besides the point. | 7 | | Dance Gavin Dance Dance Gavin Dance
Admitingly a bit of an unpopular pick for last place but hear me out. The first album the band released sans Jonny Craig, you can tell that Kurt spends more of the album trying duplicate the soul sound Jonny always brought to his performance, when Kurt Travis is more funk orientated. Mix in a very hit and miss job from Jon Mess, who's voice is strangely throaty. Not only that but the lyrics on "Death Star" as it's known are rather cringey at times. But with all that said, it's still a very enjoyable album, but far from perfect.
Score: 7.8/10 | 6 | | Dance Gavin Dance Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean
Not many bands can say their first ever releases still hold on to this day, but DGD defy that with this emotion fuled EP. Tracks like "The Robot with Human Hair Pt. II" and "Tidal Waves: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner" are oozing with passion and I would even say remain to hold up as some of the bands best. However the production is a tad wonky, but giving how it's the bands first ever effort that can be forgiven.
Score: 8/10 | 5 | | Dance Gavin Dance Instant Gratification
SHARK DAD. All kidding aside Instant Gratification's place on this list is very subject to change as... It's technically not even been officially released yet but so far this is what I have to say about it. Instant Gratification does live up to its name, and luckily it leaves a pleasant aftertaste. It's by far the groups most "traditional" effort, as many songs feature the typical Verse-Chorus-Verse structure, and holds the most potential mainstream appeal as it's also the Sacremento's poppiest album so far. Not only that, but I think Tillian can happily say that he proves himself as a good fit for the band with this album too. BUT. I do feel a tad disappointed by IG, as I feel the band went with the safe route in terms of sound. Plus certain tracks are a little forgettable. Time will tell what the final Verdict of Dance Gavin Dance's 6th full length album will be, but it's safe to assume it will leave a positive mark on the bands reputation
Score: 8.4/10 | 4 | | Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain II
DBM II is an odd beast. It's almost overwhelmingly energetic from the highlight opener "Spooks" to the fitting closer "Purple Reign". This LP also shows the return of Screamer Jon Mess after his departure after Death Star, who left the band due to a rather nasty case of Lyme Disease and he returns in his shrillest performance yet, however he still manages to sound "good" within this range, and also the return of Jonny Craig. While some tracks on DBM just go in one ear and right out the other without much thought, the highlights on this thing are career stand outs. "Privilously Poncherzied" for example is my favourite track the band has ever done, same with "Heat Seeking Ghost of Sex" trailing close behind. I will warn you all though, DBM II is a grower album.
Score: 8.7/10 | 3 | | Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain
Yeah I know, both DBM's back to back. Deal with it. Downtown Battle Mountain deserves its status as a modern classic within the Post-Hardcore genre.
Score: 9/10 | 2 | | Dance Gavin Dance Happiness
Started and completed in only 6 months, Dance Gavin Dance knew what they were doing when they recorded this slightly underrated gem. The only release that lacks Mess, Will Swan proves that he can both shred and scream simotanously. Also the groups funkiest and most serious album, Happiness is one album that's always resonated with this Pencil
Score: 9.3/10 | 1 | | Dance Gavin Dance Acceptance Speech
I've explained why I'm able to acknowledge yet accept this albums faults so many times I'm not ever going to bother this time.
Score: 9.5/10. Yep. | |
