| Opeth Albums Ranked
Bear in mind, I'm a fanboy, and enjoy all of Opeth's albums. | 1 | | Opeth Deliverance
This album has always been overlooked by Opeth fans, largely due to the love for Damnation.
Deliverance is a wonderfully crafted album, full of some of Opeth's most abrasive stuff. The outro to
the title track almost always gives me a tingle on my neck, and goosebumps on my arms. | 2 | | Opeth Heritage
Criminally underrated album. A lot of people disregard it because it has no harsh vocals, and is
quite chaotic and all over the place, but that just adds to its charm for me. To me, it's Opeth at their
pinnacle, not limiting themselves at all. Also, just because there is no harsh vocals, it doesn't mean
it lacks tense and heavy moments. Nepenthe is a great example, mixing the softer aspects of this
album's Jazz Fusion sound, with an absolutely intense riff. | 3 | | Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse
This album was their transition, from a more Black Metal orientated Opeth sound, onto the sleeker,
better produced prog Death sound they are most well known for. This album opens with a tranquil
and gentle piano intro, and leads straight into one of their heaviest songs. This album gave a taste
of what was to come, put also holds up incredibly well as it's own thing, as opposed to just being
transitional. | 4 | | Opeth Morningrise
Just a mesmerising album, with some absolutely wonderful moments. It showed a band still honing
their craft, but with more certainty and confidence than their debut. | 5 | | Opeth Ghost Reveries
I don't really need to explain why this album is great, I think everyone knows it's fantastic. | 6 | | Opeth Still Life
I love this album, just not as much as the others above it. Face Of Melinda and Benighted are two of
my favourites of theirs. | 7 | | Opeth Blackwater Park
The same as above, really. I do love this, but I guess not as much as everyone else, when
comparing Opeth albums. | 8 | | Opeth Damnation
A strong album, with a lot of emotion, and a massive risk that paid off, when it came out. In My Time
Of Need has admittedly put a couple of tears in my eyes, in the past. | 9 | | Opeth Orchid
This album has so many well written songs, but the production and the general end result of how
the songs turned out shows that this is a band still very young. I'm hoping for a remaster this year
for its 20th anniversary, because I think I would enjoy it so much more, if it sounded clearer. | 10 | | Opeth Watershed
I love this album, and it has some beautiful and utterly amazing moments, but it isn't as good as
Opeth at their best. Burden and Porcelain Heart are great single choices, and are really memorable
songs, and the album itself opens very strongly, but The Lotus Eater, and the final two tracks on the
album, can really drag. This album often feels like it was comprised of cast offs from Ghost
Reveries, with a few new tracks. | 11 | | Opeth Pale Communion
I enjoy this album a lot, but it still doesn't stop it from feeling a little formulaic and boring (by their
own standards). I hate it when people call this "Heritage Pt 2", because Heritage feels unrestricted
and almost like an improvised jam. This feels very structured, and if anything, it is Watershed pt 2..
It feels like a slightly cheaper Watershed, with clean vocals. | |
