University Choices

I know you Yanks are allowed to apply for as many universities as you rlike once it gets to it r(or at least that's what I hear) but you're only rallowed a maximum of 5 here. I put myself in ra shitty position by not ractually going to any open days (couldn't go to some but there were rrmany and I was just a little lazy) so I now have a grand decision to rmake on my insurance roffer and firm offer. It's nice to be in this position rbut doesn't make the decision any easier.

Aberdeen - Just to clarify, I live a good... 700 miles(?) from Aberdeen. There were only about 30 unis that did my course in the first place (Biotechnology) and quite a few were asking for chemistry, which i didn't do. What made it worse is that these unis were either among the best or among the shittest, which meant there wasn't really one in the middle that would be a comfortable insurance. Aberdeen poses to be the closest thing to the comfortable middle with them asking for BBB according to UCAS (I got BBC in my AS but was pretty damn close to AAC). I did get an offer for them... for ABB. These guys were supposed to be my insurance; my backup if all failed and an ABB backup is ambitious with virtually no margin for error. HOWEVER... Aberdeen is infamous for its clearing... generosity. They're known to take in many students through clearing and those who don't necessarily make the grade. According to Whatuni.com, only 10 people applied for this course in 2013, of which 5 got an offer. Now, i'm just going to assume that they have more possible places than 5. So the question is whether or not I reject them with the idea that I'll try to get into Aberdeen through clearing if i fail. It's extremely risky, but it seems oddly possible and feasible to me, which is worrying. Pros - Beautiful university, respected in the field of biology, could potentially take me in regardless of grades because they're so under applied. Cons - So far away from everything I know and love. Aberdeen is very grey. Transport to family costs a fortune. University is the worst out of my choices. Dull-ish nightlife. THERE IS NO MUSIC SCENE HERE.

An Awesome Wave

Leeds - Offer for AAB. Leeds hasn't got the best reputation among the older generations. Both my parents independently thought Leeds was a pretty shite university and they're not the only ones. Since then, it's undergone metamorphosis and is now one of the leading universities in biology. They invest a lot of money into their research and are really making gains from this. They're also climbing up he university rankings too. I predict that they're only bound to improve in all areas and their forever improving biology faculty is very appealing for me. Additionally, the night life is rated as one of the best in country from a musical point of view and a partying point of view. All unis I applied to, except aberdeen was supposedly offering AAB for their courses, so this doesn't particularly stand out. Pros - A uni that's really developing into something I would love to be a part of in the future. Grand city with loads going on. A very nice uni in general. Cons - Library is gorgeous, albeit tiny. The family frown upon the name. Accommodation is a million miles away from campus.

Surrey - ABB. Just got the offer today and surprised me because I was expecting AAB, so this literally puts them on the same level as Aberdeen without all the distance nuisances. That's pretty much boils down as being the only good side in my opinion, however. I'm not too fond of Guildford and been there many times when visiting my aunt. It's just not my kind of place. Furthermore, the course differs all so slightly and focuses more on genetics than anything else, which is also a little off putting. It ideally isn't the place I truly want to go to but when it comes to pitching this against Aberdeen, I have no idea which one to go for. Don't get me wrong, i'm honoured to have an offer from the place but in comparison to the other 4, this is the university I'd like to go to the least but convenience (i'm like a 20 quid train journey from family) is a huge selling point.

York - (Pending) Oh York. Beautiful York. It's such a lovely place; just the right size of a city from me and if I'm not too happy with it, I'm pretty close to the behemoth that is Leeds. I love the collegiate system that's in place and how connected all the students are because they all live on campus (for the most part). My parents are all gunning for York as the name is such a prestigious one and just has good connotations linked to it. The course appears to be only one accredited by the society of biology, which means that it's more likely that i'll get my sandwich year and I'll come out of it a better qualified graduate in contrast to the rest. It's the highest ranking uni out of the ones I applied for so snobbish me is making York sound very appealing and is apparently 4th best in the country for biology. On the flip side, the uni is separate from the actual city of york. This is a huge annoyance for me and i don't think i'll be too bothered having to walk like over an hour to get to get to the city/gigs/shops/clubs. Nightlife is apparently a bit stale. However, from a purely academic and career perspective, York are offering the most. I know I haven't got an offer for them just yet but it's still worth thinking about.: offer for AAB, no nonsense. Definitely my firm.

Cardiff - (Pending) The university itself is a very good place with my course pretty much forcing students to take a sandwich year in the industry. Their offer on UCAS was stated to be AAB or ABB. If it's AAB, I don't particularly know what I'll do because it's not as appealing as Leeds or York who'll probably offer the same. on the other hand, if it is ABB, then it most likely sits ahead of Surrey as my insurance. I somehow doubt that surrey or cardiff would take me in through clearing because they were more sought after than Aberdeen. The problem with Cardiff is more about the city itself and how it's apparently a bit of a shit. There isn't anything left to say, really. Obviously I'd be more than happy to go to Cardiff, but it's more about where they stand in comparison to the other unis.: offer for ABB, which includes biology and chemistry. One slight problem... I don't do chemistry...?
