01.07.15 | Good choices, mort! Good luck to you too. You still trying for Philosophy |

01.07.15 | yeah. got an offer from uea last year but had to reject it for erm, complicated reasons haha. also doing 2 external retakes (eg i go into to college to do the exams and thats it, dont have to go in throughout the year, do all my studying at home)
basically i just fucked up one exam last year for reasons not even to do with the content, im still pretty pissed of about it because i put a lot of hard work in. |
KrazyKris
01.07.15 | Not that I know anything about that AAB, BBC, FBI shit (I mean, their letters, but that's it for me). Reading all this and being an anti-social guy I'd say aim for York and stay away from Surrey. I don't know, how important that whole music & party point is for you, therefore can't judge really. But odds are you're gonna spend more time worrying about your studies than about which concert to go to, so it seems logical to rather look at it from an educational point of view.
Then again, if you're just a lazy assed guy like about 90% of students and just want to study anything cause uni life is so great, then Leeds it is. |
Mort.
01.07.15 | oh yeah i went to leeds open day, was one of my choices last year, nice place |
ChoccyPhilly
01.07.15 | Good luck then, Mort.
@kris Do you do the numbered system? It's not so much that i'll be out partying every night but I want the option. Same with the music scene, which I see myself being more a part of. |

JJKeys
01.07.15 | I live near Leeds, it's a nice enough place and the uni is pretty sweet, especially for my course. As for the music scene, it's pretty damn good - you have the First Direct Arena, the O2 Academy, The Key Club, Brudnell Social Club, Belgrave Music Hall, The Wardrobe, and the recently deceased Cockpit (RIP, it was easily the best venue by far) as well as others that I can't remember at this moment in time
It's my first choice now that Oxford has rejected me - maybe I'll see you there |
ChoccyPhilly
01.07.15 | They all have applicant days, so I'm going to them except maybe Aberdeen because that would cost over 200 quid but it's nice to lay down my thoughts right now |

@mad I know right. i know some people who applied in october and still don't have a reply from york. I applied mid dec, so it's a little less frustrating. Where else did you apply to? |
JJKeys
01.07.15 | Geophysics; the course at Leeds is the best I've seen in the UK because of the freedom of choice within the course. Oxford was a tad too Geology and Paleontology based for my liking. |
KrazyKris
01.07.15 | @Choccy
Actually, I don't even know what they're for. Are those some grades you need to get in your entry exams? If so, we haven't any on Austrian universities. At least in most branches, they started again with those in medicine, journalism & philosophy, cause they are so overrun. We have them in our version of college though.
And for party/music vs. education: Of course everyone wants both and usually people compromise on something that offers both with certain limitations rather than focussing on one that is really the best for either of those options. My unspecific advice would be to find out which one is more important for you right now and make your decision after that. If you compromise on both, you could end up being frustrated about something more often than necessary |
ChoccyPhilly
01.07.15 | @JJ Fair enough. it seems that you made the best choice then.
@Kris yes, the grades I stated next to each university are their requirement grades, coined as conditional offers. I have no idea how the austrian system works but I thought most universities work like that. There's so much more to it than party/music vs. education. That only comes into place for Leeds vs. York vs. Aberdeen and even then, there are other things to think about. the more opinions i get, the better really. |
JJKeys
01.07.15 | But Oxford was Oxford, man! It's such a lovely and quaint place - there were people sitting on a flight of steps on a public footpath just reading
If you did that in Bradford you'd get stabbed |
ChoccyPhilly
01.07.15 | haha obviously, who wouldn't want to go for oxbridge? Leeds can't be that bad anyway. It definitely won't have the same
aspirational ethos but it's not like Kent or something |
KrazyKris
01.07.15 | @Choccy
Sure there's more. I mean, Aberdeen raises the question, how attached you are to your family & friends. It is a damn long way. And as a student away from my hometown (I am neither student nor away from my hometown, but anyway) one of the first things I'd think about would be money. The cheaper everyday life is, the better. At least if your parents aren't gonna pay for anything you want.
On the other hand looking at the reputation of students & professors of those unis might be quite good too. I guess, you'll always find people you like, but still different unis attract different characters.
And the last point might not be relevant to you, still you don't seem like the kind of guy that has to prove something or is craving for success. So why not look for the one that's unlikely to give you a hard time throughout those years. I think the reputation of a university is quite important in the UK when looking for a job, but unless you are out for big money (which you aren't, cause biotechnology) it might not be that important. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.07.15 | it's not attachment, it's more about trouble. My parents both warn me that if I go to Aberdeen, I'm further away from financial help and that's already a big concern. I'll be away from home in all these universities but if I'm £100 or £150 quid from a one way ticket to london (where the family are at), it's a hefty price to pay if i run into financial calamity. I'll look at the reputation of professors when I go to applicant days but they all offer quality is what I'm saying.
yeah, it's debated whether uni rankings mean a lot to employers but it's definitely quite important in the uni culture here. they all offer good career prospects with York being the most advantageous, so it's not something I'm too worried about. |

Well, seems like your the kind of guy for the golden mean. And for that Leeds seems to be the most fitting choice.
Not as financially risky as Aberdeen, not as difficult to get into a Cardiff and it has more to offer on the fun side of life than both York & Surrey. Leeds it is! |
ChoccyPhilly
01.08.15 | Actually Leeds and York are probably the hardest to get into out of the 5 choices but thanks for your input.

01.08.15 | Leeds is the party city. Depending on how studious (or not) you are this might be something you should think about. I didn't do any work for best part of a year when I was there.
York is the opposite (but admittedly a beautiful city).
Cardiff is a city that has had loads of investment over the last ten years and is on the up. That'd be a good shout.
Don't know about Surrey or Aberdeen but I'm assuming Surrey is in Guildford which is pretty nice. |
CalculatingInfinity
01.08.15 | You put far, far more thought into your University choises then I did. Wish you the best man :] |
Archelirion
01.08.15 | Haha, by the time I applied all the criteria I wanted for a university I only had 4 choices :P I've heard things about all of these places bar Leeds and Cardiff, and they've been generally positive about them. Surrey has a good rock scene, as does Leeds, and York has cheap-as-hell alcohol (if you're into that sort of thing). Prepare for it to rain CONSTANTLY in Cardiff if my mate in Swansea is correct.
I would have a look at which ones have good reputations for your course, so going on what you've written I'd make York my first, but your insurance is tricky as all your choices are roughly the same grades.
For whatever you choose, I wish you best of luck. Get involved with stuff, it's the best opportunity to do so - and there'll almost certainly be something you'll be interested in (I now do brewing, for example!) |

02.18.15 | Different to A Level exams. You have a section A and B, Section A you have to answer every question and are seen as standard calculations with knoweldge of the course and is worth 55%. It can be fine but can throw tricks in here. Section B you answer 3 out of 4/5 questions and if you answer more the highest marked attempts are counted. These are harder questions, truely testing your knoweldge of the course and worth 45%. Linear Algebera was really easy, Calculus I was pretty good but Number and Sets was shit. Probably the only topic this year I won't get a 1st in. |

02.19.15 | York and Cardiff are both decent options; I know people at both who enjoy them. @johnny thing is, I loved the university of surrey itself. The staff were all so welcoming and it was somewhere I could see myself going. The problem is that i HATE guildford and the course is wrong. On the other hand, Cardiff's course is perfect but the applicant day left a stale taste in my mouth. The SU was amazing, and the city was much better but the uni itself didn't impress me that much and touring the bioscience building was as bleak experience |

Fuck Aberdeen.
Leeds scene is fan-fucking-tastic. (Also, if you're into your drugs you couldn't be happier. I have heard some ridiculous statistics about class A consumption at Leeds Met). Great band scene and great student paper - at least in terms of music, get involved!
Fuck Surrey, although you're near some of the best music institutions in the country so the local band scene is a lot better than you would expect from, you know, Guildford.
York's a great uni, but the place will probably bore you to tears.
Cardiff is kinda eww. Uni=good. I wouldn't touch the nightlife with a stick. A lot of them take the train journey to Bristol to avoid the worst of it.

StrangerofSorts
02.19.15 | Also, ignore what everyone says about 'needing' to be on a campus. These people are liars. There is never a sense of 'university spirit' that isn't strangely Orwellian. Most of my friends couldn't wait to get out... |
ChoccyPhilly
02.19.15 | @stranger I am trembling. Thing with York is that I can get to Leeds on the train, so I can still get involved with the music scene if I go to York. Other than that, thanks for your opinion.
I get that a campus isn't EVERYTHING and I get what you mean but I just preferred the feel of the Surrey campus compared to Cardiff.
And hey, at least Guildford or Aberdeen or York aren't as bland as Durham |

StrangerofSorts
02.20.15 | 'Bristol is such a cool place, what are you studying (and did you start from first year)?'
I switched from psychology to philosophy so I had to - a bit of an expensive decision but well worth it. Bristol's great as long as you stay away from most of the student stuff. The local music scene is amazing (though obviously not as good as the glory days) and I've done my best to get my fingers into as many musical pies as possible.
The problem for a lot of people going to places like Bristol, Leeds and (esp.) London is that if you don't make the effort it kind of all passes you by. |
anarchistfish
02.20.15 | Bristol's sweet but I can't stand the students here anymore. UWE people are way more chilled out. |

yeah true. I was kinda disappointed bristol didn't have a campus but you get used to it and if the city's cool it doesn't matter at all. having a good student union is probably more important |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.20.15 | "Bristol's sweet but I can't stand the students here anymore. UWE people are way more chilled out."
True, the Bristol crowd is ridiculous, but Bristol vs UWE as universities isn't even a contest. Can't say I regret not taking my Bristol offer, but it still would have been kinda cool. |

02.20.15 | @matt I live near norwich and regularly go there. The UEA is a fantastic uni and norwich is a great place too; always feels very safe and secure and the music scene is very healthy. I regret not applying there in all honesty.
@fish oh yeah, I agree too. When I went to visit Cardiff, I was hugely impressed by the student union and how much was going on there. Even if the uni was a little bland, I could easily see myself hanging out in their huge SU building for hours at a time
@stranger what made you change from Bath to Bristol? I thought Bath was great, other than the fact that it was an ugly concrete jungle and the town was rather uneventful. I would have definitely applied if they did my course |
StrangerofSorts
02.20.15 | Few reasons:
1. The place bored me to tears.
2. Terrible lecturers and course. They have high student satisfaction numbers for no reason other than bullying/bribing the students ("if you don't rate us highly, your degrees will be worthless"). Same as a lot of places, but particularly bad there.
3. No arts students. Not to bash you science guys, but overall you aren't half a boring bunch - having lots of art-y things going on around you makes time anywhere SO much more enjoyable.
4. It just felt like an extension of school.
A lot of the people at Bristol are unbearable, but you get them (to some extent) everywhere. |
MattTD
02.20.15 | A lot of my friends want to go to Bath; personally the only positive I could find for going there is that it's a nice place to live. Bristol seems more down-to-earth, even if it is a bit too hilly for my Cambridge legs.
I went to one of the UEA open days last year and it was just the perfect uni for me. They gave me the offer the day after my application arrived, so they clearly want me as well. |
ChoccyPhilly
02.20.15 | @stranger Define your kind of unbearable? yeah, I'm more than certain there'll be people like that everywhere but probably could be worse at the city universities.
I've got a friend who has an offer for Bath and I looked at their societies and the lack of variety was rather upsetting.
@matt unconditional too, huh? you must have gotten some killer AS grades. You'll love the music scene there. Almost all venues across norwich are owned by the UEA SU and they get discounts etc. and it's just run very well. What are you studying? |
MattTD
02.20.15 | Film and English, UEA have a really good English department/course so I gravitated towards that. Didn't actually get phenomenal grades at AS, I just worked my arse off in the first part of A2 to get good predictions. |

02.20.15 | @matt I had to essentially beg my Biology teacher to predict me a B after i got a C from AS. I know a lot of schools that hand out any grade as long as you ask for it. Frankly, I was lucky to get predicted AAB to begin with.
@apert I used to live in London and I was tired of life there. I wanted to explore other places.
@SPR you came to the wrong thread... This is predominantly about UK unis |
MattTD
02.20.15 | Literally the only reason I have an A prediction in Eng Lang is because the teacher really likes me.
I thought about London but accommodation is ridiculously overpriced. The cheapest option is around £120 a week, which would get you ensuite in most campus unis. Not to mention that London is pretty rough and really polluted. |
ChoccyPhilly
02.20.15 | York accommodation is mad. 103 quid a week is the minimum and that's for an economy, shared and self catered room. To make it worse, it's only exclusive to one college and the vast majority of rooms are at 120. |

04.17.15 | @mort yeah, good luck with that man! Norwich is an incredible place and the music scene is something you'll love for sure.
@zak I know, i can't see myself going into research but I'm not sure of an alternative. I'll cross that barrier in a couple years time |

04.17.15 | @Choccy When it comes to abstract algebra in Number and Codes I wonder too, I'm fine with anything else but that's a pain in the arse. FP2 is present in Calculus 2 I believe so you probably would have hated it. There's less stress at Uni because at Six Form you always have an atmosphere of pressure to add on to the fears in your mind. All of your classmates and the teachers are so stressed near the end and you have so many exams, Uni feels more managable since you have less exams (but equal amount of material) and you can get away from people very easily. |
