House Shows Are Really Something Else

Last night I took an hour long drive out to a house show/birthday party/vinyl release for a couple local bands, Laika (their drummer was the birthday boy) and Anodes. Naturally, both bands played, as well as Lord Snow and a couple other locals, Gilliam and Drangus (Tommy Pini of Family Might). The house was a goddamned optical illusion; it looks like a tiny house in south St. Louis, but it was three stories plus a basement, had six people comfortably living in it and a variety of other open rooms. There were at least 60-70 people in this house at the peak of things, possibly more, but I'm not one to guess numbers at a glance. Let's just say it was a lot of people. This is probably pretty standard for house shows, but this is the first I've ever been to. I spent my earlier teenage years being in a metal band and ditzing around venues and really only checking out the local scene that way. The show took place in the basement, which would more accurately be referred to as a cellar given the 'antique' connotation of the word, since this basement was entirely wood & stone, with no pipes or innards of the home covered and hanging so low that if you were taller than 6'2", you were bending over. In the back of the basement, there was a room with an eerie red light coming out of it, which was on numerous occasions referred to by other attendants as "The Spook Hole", commenting that others "should go roll around in it, there's broken glass in there!" In all honesty, everything about this show was flat out trashy - and it was fucking great. I don't get out for shows much anymore since I've got five fractured vertebrae, and when I do I obviously am not doing a whole lot of moving around. But, if it's any indication, my neck is still stiff almost 24 hours later. Something about the vibes at this show made me actually push back when the crowd got rowdy and even get in a little. I regret that immensely now, but at the same time, it's refreshing to do something like that for the first time in almost two years. People were hanging by pipes in the ceiling and swinging off of them. It should probably be noted that the people putting on this show are the people that, at another house show I didn't attend but heard all about, were shut down by police and decided top retaliate by taking the show to a uhaul and driving it around while the remaining bands played their sets. All of the bands that played were amazing, I was particularly impressed by Anodes and Lord Snow, and Gilliam's vocalist has an incredible presence, flailing about and screaming so loud his voice breaks. You can tell the dude was putting himself wholly into the music he was playing. I wish I could accurately judge their overall performance, but their guitarist fell ill the morning of so it was drum bass and vocals. Still good though. Raw as fuck. Raw is a good word to describe this entire show. If you've never been to a house show, get to one.
