"getting" Black Metal/extreme Metal

I recently saw the rageahölic's retrospective review of Darkthrone's discography, and it convinced me to give black metal (and extreme metal in general) a try just to see if I could enjoy it (or at least understand why others enjoy it). I listened to Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger and was not able to get into it (granted after only 1 listen). I would really appreciate help understanding what is great about it (musically, sonically, and otherwise) and other variants of extreme metal in general (as before this, Becoming the Archetype is probably the heaviest band I've listened to/enjoyed). Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Transilvanian Hunger

I'm just going to break down my initial opinions on the album (and by extension, the
genre of black metal as a whole). The drums were literally the same the entire record,
the guitars played the same few notes over and over again while strumming furiously
with little variant rarely playing anything but the songs main riff (which I found very
repetitive), and the vocals weren't exactly enjoyable (harsh vocals have never been my
favorite, but I see their place in music and can enjoy them if the music surrounding
them is interesting and mix with them). The production values might of been why I
couldn't distinguish any moment on this album from another, but poor production is
apparently a staple of extreme music (black metal especially). I don't understand why,
but whatever. I personally don't see the appeal, and I'm not sure what I should be
looking to enjoy or "get".
