2014's Top Ten: Deathschool Edition

It's been a really awesome year so far for the art of what some call "music". You guys should look into it.
10Dog Fashion Disco
Sweet Nothings

This band knows what they're doing at this point. If you've enjoyed them in the past, you'll
enjoy them now, even if this doesn't hold up to their masterpiece "Adultery".
9Lionize
Jetpack Soundtrack

Hard rock that isn't ashamed to be hard rock, but also puts other modern hard rock to shame.
8Gridlink
Longhena

Not a typical grind album, but it never lets its moments of beauty and obvious influences from
other genres get in the way of skull fucking you.
7Look What I Did
Zanzibar III: Analog Prison

A short-ish rock opera from what is becoming one of my favorite bands. These guys tackle
genres without fear, blend them into a smooth puree, then present them as if the product had
always existed, and they never for a moment sound like they don't know what they're doing.
6Musk Ox
Woodfall

A beautiful collection of soundscapes that are explored by masterful musicians of classical
training with modern influencers.
5Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

The atmosphere on this album is enough to crush you, but chooses instead to lift you up.
4Death Grips
The Powers That B - Part I: Niggas on the Moon

Death Grips refuse to slow down their experimentation.
3Busdriver
Perfect Hair

Rap album of the year, but you knew that. Come on! Busdriver's flow puts most to shame.
Couple that with his continued experimentation and a deeper understanding of his sound in
general and you have one hell of an experimental rap album. Danny Brown has a verse on this
that he of course kills.
2Swans
To Be Kind

Swans culmination of everything and a few new tricks as well. Damn near AOTY
1The Smith Street Band
Throw Me in the River

The builds on this album are complete mastery. There isn't a wasted note or any lyric short of
genius. This band has created the masterpiece that anyone who has been following them knew
they had in them. This should be one that is discussed far beyond the year 2014. Still don't
quite know how to put into words my love for this album.
