Heather
1Bjork
Debut

In 5th grade we got a new art teacher. I knew I was going to like her the second I
saw her. She had tats, a full sleeve on one arm, and some isolated tattoos up and
down her other. She had ratty hair and clothing as well, but my school's never been
all that prestigious.
2The Grateful Dead
Two From The Vault

She was super chill if you didn't get on her bad side. She was all about the energy of
a person, the atmosphere of a situation. She always had these artistic exercises to
help relieve stress and anxiety. She knew if something was wrong with you the
second you walked in the door.
3Guns N' Roses
Appetite For Destruction

I made a bad first impression on her in 5th grade, but I was like 11. I was hanging
out with some really dumb guys at the time. Up until that grade, I only had one
friend and he was really dorky so I was never very popular. But hanging out with
these guys, I was a different person. I was loud and dumb, and made a lot of stupid
noises. Turns out she thought I was actually mentally disabled or just really really
dumb.
4The Beatles
Abbey Road

In 6th grade I shaped up quick. I really did like her as a teacher, and having her
think I was an idiot wasn't all that great for me. The class regularly had pretty deep
discussions for a bunch of 12 year olds imo. I always participated. She thought I was
pretty deep and ahead of my grade intellectually. Over the year, we developed a
pretty close bond. The whole class loved her though. She helped me through my
grandmother's death more than my parents did, I confided in her about self harm
and she told me she used to do the same thing. She was my best friend.
5Queen
Queen II

We related on all kinds of levels. Of course, she was into older music than I was. But
she was pretty up to date on the music teens listened to, if it was good. She played
guitar and invited students with instrumental capabilities to play in front of the class,
or just have a jam session with her. There were only one or two memorable ones but
they inspired me to play guitar nonetheless. She loved to share her music with the
class, in hope and pursuit of changing the taste of some of them.
6Led Zeppelin
Houses of the Holy

On her artistic side, she was pretty good. She did a lot of abstract art, which isn't
the most technical form of art, but she wasn't a technical person. She liked Jackson
Pollock, Franz Kline, and Claude Monet. She also appreciated the works of Marcel
Duchamp.
7Led Zeppelin
Physical Graffiti

I don't think I'll ever have a teacher as amazing as her. Her class was always the
one I looked forward to. We did courses on photography, abstract art, graffiti, we
got to compose a song at the end of the year. Yeah, it turned out horrible but she
was always making sure everybody was actually having fun with the project. She
wanted you to participate but if you weren't the best artist she wouldn't judge you.
8Brand New
The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me

She was an extremely confessional person, to me anyways. She was the realest
person I knew. She would never bullshit you, no matter who you were. She was
always there for you if you needed her. She was probably a better counselor than
the one that was actually hired to be a counselor. I'm actually not sure if other
schools have counselors but we're a fucked up bunch
9My Chemical Romance
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge

She's the reason my class was a community more than just acquainted students.
She brought everybody closer together. Everybody walked out of her class with a
different part of them revealed. We saw sides of each other we'd never seen before.
It was just the most personal class I've ever had, and definitely the closest I've ever
been to a teacher.
10Prince
Purple Rain

She was the biggest Prince nerd ever. We watched 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'
covered by him and Tom Petty. It gives me chills every time.
She left this past year. School isn't really the same. I kind of took what she brought
to school every day for granted. School was never supposed to be that personal,
that fun, that emotional, that good. I've never had the same connection with
anybody. She taught me so many things. She taught me how to truly live in a way.
I'll never forget her.
