Archelirion: Should I Bother With Vinyl?

Archelirion 10.03.14	There's a shop up the road from where I'm living that sells both pies and vinyl. I like pies, but I don't feel qualified enough for the vinyl yet :P

pedro70512 10.03.14	sound quality is about the same as 320k but it's usually mixed to be softer. I prefer the sound but it's not technically better than high-quality digital.

ZippaThaRippa 10.03.14	It's a terribly expensive hobby. I started my collection last December and I've already sunk more than 500 dollars on records. That being said, vinyl is a wonderful thing. There's something nice about having full size art, inserts and an actual physical piece of music. It feels like a more complete artistic statement. Also, lots of bands will throw in free little extras like posters and stickers. It's definitely a bit of an investment but it's been worth it to me. Give it a shot!

ZippaThaRippa 10.03.14	Also, if you're into a bit of crusty hardcore, Deathwish Inc has a huge selection of vinyl records that are constantly being repressed for very, very reasonable prices. They throw in tons of free shit and I've almost never had any shipping problems with them.
Friday13th 10.03.14	I only buy vinyls for old albums since that was the original medium and new digital copies are obviously sourced from some sort of analog recording anyways. I don't understand people who say new albums recorded with digital equipment are better on vinyl. It's more for the aesthetic value, or maybe they like the crackling I guess.

Archelirion 10.03.14	I've always loved collecting CD's, as it just feels that much nicer having a tangible object that you can admire. So yeah, that aspect does appeal to me. And yes, I do like crusty hardcore.

Mad. 10.03.14	Lol funny question cuz my dad just bought a vinyl player after having a ridiculously good/expensive CD system for ages, and we're thinking the CDs sound better. Could be different if you have a less powerful system tho I dunno

ZippaThaRippa 10.03.14	Sound quality depends on a lot of things. The weight of the vinyl itself is pretty quickly. Older records were printed on lighter, thinner material. They aren't likely going to sound better than a CD. Newer records are often printed on heavy 180G. You get a lot cleaner sound out of heavy pressings. Something about the grooves being easier for the needle to read.

You also then need a decent audio receiver and speakers to really notice the differences. Was about to repeat what Dominion said, percussion alot of times sounds way better, almost like you're actually hearing as if your were there in person. 2 sounds amazing on wax.

If it's quality vinyl and the album has good production it can sound significantly better than any other format." this is extremely wrong. the only conceivable way vinyl could sound objectively better is if it was actually mastered on analog tape and put directly onto the record, and even at that a transfer to a 24-bit digital file will still probably produce better results. as it stands right now, there is no other medium that can produce the same frequency response and dynamic range as a 24-bit uncompressed digital file. the "warmth" that comes from vinyl records is actually distortion in the signal path that functionally degrades the sound quality. people prefer records the for same reason they prefer film over digital or any other analog medium, because the inherent flaws give it "character" (which is totally subjective). vinyl records are fun to collect, trust me, i have over 100 of them. but dont be misguided, uncompressed digital files still are the best audio quality you can get. not to mention that records usually require pretty pricey setups to actually sound good, whereas a good pair of headphones and a DAC will get you far better sound from a digital file without having to drop all that money on a stereo setup.

For quite possibly THE most prominent/important label in hardcore right now, Deathwish has that independent vibe like it's run out of a bedroom but with an insane amount of professionalism and reliability. Website is easy to use, prices are great (even considering shipping, which is usually the ballbuster with indie labels), customer service is pleasant and direct, you get free stuff in your order (plus a handwritten note, nice touch), and the products are wonderful; the solid packaging and glossy inserts are cool and whatnot but with something like the "Jane Doe" 2XLP, they really go all out (and it's only $22, wow). Anyway, yeah, vinyl collecting. Vinyl costs money. (Good) turntables cost lots of money. (Good) speakers cost lots of money. It's an entirely subjective decision to pick up vinyl because you have to factor in financial priority and your overall financial situation (i.e. how much money can you burn and what other things would you rather burn it on?), but I will say this: it's always great to support music instead of just stealing it like everyone does all the time and vinyl feels like the most rewarding way of doing so; you get a product that's inherently more "real" than a CD or digital file and it looks nice (packaging!), sounds nice (warm sound!), feels nice (nothing beats a heavy record in your hands!), and lasts (if you don't buy a shit turntable!). Starting vinyl collecting is hard if you wanna start with a setup to last the foreseeable future because your bank is gonna take a crowbar. The best turntables are at least $250 and they don't come with speakers.
