Agalloch Serpens In Cvlmination 2014 St. Louis Ranked
Thrones (their opener) and Fister (local opener) did not make it for whatever reason, though I'm not mad. As a result Agalloch played a nice long set (John said they played everything they had rehearsed for the tour.) Here is my ranking of the performance which overall was well beyond my expectation. |
1 | Agalloch Into The Painted Grey
Song 2 of the setlist. This was one of the most intense live performances I've seen and completely raised the bar for what I expected out of the show. It was my first experience truly freaking out during a show over how good it was. Gained a new respect for the song which I already liked. |
2 | Dark Matter Gods
A stellar performance that made this song feel a lot less incoherent than it did on the album. |
3 | Falling Snow
This was the first of a three part encore, and I was hoping they'd play it as it's long been one of my favorite songs period. However, I made the realization during this show that their earlier work was studio work, their newer work was clearly written with a live performance in mind. Every performance of "Falling Snow" I've heard has been just a touch off, and this one was as well, but still a great experience. |
4 | The Astral Dialogue
The show opener. A very solid performance by all members, and a great way to start things off. |
5 | Limbs
The last song before the encore, other than a lack of the familiar opening, it was a good performance of one the band's most famous songs. Like Falling Snow, it didn't feel quite as tightly performed as their newer material. |
6 | Celestial Effigy
A solid performance of a song that still just hasn't grown on me. |
7 | The Melancholy Spirit
It was awesome to hear anything off of Pale Folklore live, but this was never my favorite PF track and as such the live performance wasn't as exciting as I might have hoped. "She Painted Fire... Pt 1" would have been orgasmic as an alternative. |
8 | Vales Beyond Dimension
As expected this song was better live, but it still doesn't do much for me. |
9 | Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires
Same as above. |
10 | The Great Cold Death Of The Earth
Much like The Melancholy Spirit, I'd rather hear many other tracks off of The Mantle than this live, but it was a great sing along experience. John's cleans were a bit sketchy, but I expected they would be based on other footage I've seen (not of this song, if I'm not mistaken this was the first tour and possibly the first show they've ever played this for.) |
11 | Of Stone, Wind and Pillor
I really hate to rank this so low, it was a very pleasant surprise that John said they didn't originally plan to play until they learned the oepning act couldn't make it. 4th song they ever wrote, definitely a great experience to see it live but I just didn't get much out of the performance. |
12 | Plateau of the Ages
This was the show closer, and the least compelling performance for me personally (even though it's one of my favorites off of the album), it did set a good final vibe for the show and John looked pretty epic holding aloft cauldrons of incense while St. Louis devil horned the shit out of him like they were aiding him in conjuring some spirit or something as the rest of the band jammed out. |
