My Favorite 20 Smashing Pumpkins Songs
I don't like their 2000s stuff. After hearing all of it, it just wasn't the same. rHere's my favorite 90s SP ranked. Don't expect mainly hits or anything. |
20 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Eye Single
"Eye" A successful full on electronic experiment. It's catchy and really shows that the
Pumpkins aren't held back by a genre while still retaining their style. |
19 | | The Smashing Pumpkins The Aeroplane Flies High
"Set the Ray to Jerry" This is probably their second best b-side ever. Heavy bass,
hectic drum, and an overall solid sound. This outranks a large sum of their
discography. |
18 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"Tonight, Tonight" Such a gorgeous introduction into such a lush album. The large
orchestral production couples with great drums and catchy lyrics hint at the diverse
ride that is Mellon Collie. |
17 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"Bodies" One of the Pumpkins best heavy songs. For people who strongly prefer
Siamese Dream and Gish, this may even seem like a failure, but for me its one of
their most fun songs. The guitar is really nice here. |
16 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Gish
"Crush" Most of Gish is extremely fuzzy and somewhat shoegazy, but Crush shows
that they have other tricks up their sleeve. This trick is one of a mellow, bass heavy
heart-filled track. A style the Pumpkins excel at. |
15 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Gish
"Bury Me" This song is the epitome of Gish. With chilling back ups from Iha and a
strong bass and guitar line this serves to be one of their definitive statements and a
great introductory to the band. |
14 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
"Hummer" Now, I know some of you have been thinking "where the hell are the
Siamese Dream tracks?" Well, it's their best one, so the highlights are going to be high
on the list dude. Here's the first. A cool littleintro, long shoegazy fuzz, a overall just
another testament to their overall sound. |
13 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Pisces Iscariot
"Plume" Now most of Pisces sounds like the b-side compilation that it is, but Plume is
different. It sounds like a last minute outtake from Gish, something that deserves to
be on Gish. It's fuzzy, the lyrics are great, and its incredibly well written. It's an even
better listen during the summer. It's so sunshiny. |
12 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"Love" These lyrics are just awful, and those drums man, and the overall mood. It's
so unique and so fleshed out. It doesn't standout as much as it blends into the scenery
in one of the best ways possible. Strangely hypnotizing. |
11 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Adore
"Pug" One of the few upbeat songs on Adore. Also one of the strongest. The electronic
bloops are cool and overall it's one of the finer moments on such an endless album.
Adore's biggest failing is that its too long and that it has filler, but I assure you, this is
one of the necessary tracks. |
10 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"In the Arms of Sleep" Of course this song makes the top 10. If anything, the top 10
here was somehow obvious. Picking 11-20 was a difficult feat since there are so many
contenders, but yeah. One of the most passionate mellow songs they have. |
9 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Adore
"Appels + Oranjes" What if more songs like this were on Adore? In a way its almost
like warning of Machina. It does such a better job than Machina when it comes to
electronica though. Plus this is as catchy as it gets. |
8 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Gish
"Tristessa" One of the most memorable songs by Gish by far. Wish a perfect guitar riff
and bouncy as hell drums. Oh Chamberlin's bouncy drums, how I love them. |
7 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
"Quiet" Great guitar, great drums, perfect lyrics. That whole "jesus are you
listening?/we are the fossils part" is probably one of their greatest verses ever. |
6 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"Here Is No Why" Such an original riff, its almost as bouncy as the drums. The pickup
is wonderful and Corgan's voice actually kind of sounds pretty here. |
5 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Adore
"Ava Adore" Whether you like Adore or not, this is one of their best songs ever. The
music, the catchy lyrics, that dark bass, that awesome guitar solo. Yeah. |
4 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
"Where Boys Fear to Tread" The introduction to this song is probably one of the best
things ever. The guitar and drums go back and forth showing off. The rest of the song
is great too, even Iha's backups show themselves. Definitely the strongest song on
Mellon Collie. It just crashes through. |
3 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
"Mayonaise" For a lot of people this is #1. For me its #3. With another unique take on
a riff (partially due to a slightly broken guitar owned by Iha) this song is one of the
few that truly make the Pumpkins legendary. Insightful lyrics about being yourself,
more wonderful Chamberlin drums, and of course another cool solo. There's no way
this song could get any better. There's even an acoustic bridge. |
2 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Drown Single
"Drown" An 8 minute song. The first 4 minutes alone would have made this song make
the top 10. They contain some of the best Pumpkins riffs, drums, and lyrics yet again.
Powerful fuzzy and introspective. The other 4 minutes comprise of feedback soloing
with the drums beating along. Of course, the song ends in pure feedback to sum it all
up. Perfect. |
1 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
"Geek U.S.A." So why is this the best Pumpkins song ever? Easy. amazing drum intro,
their best drums throughout (bouncy and complex), a catchy as fuck riff with a
background of rhythm guitar fuzz, speedy Corgan vocals that also contain tons of
heart and emotion. It's dancy. It has a cool mellow section that not only mentions the
siamese twins, but also is as lush as any of their mellow songs. Then the song picks
up again the solo starts. Oh and did I forget that its their best guitar solo? Eventually
it gets to the bridge, which feels like going over a cliff. It slows down to reveal its final
lines and eventually arrives at: "She gave it all away, we really love the USA" which
reeks of underlying sarcasm. Just mind blowing. |
