The second bands who focused on a more clean overall sound came around - moving away from the more abrasive and unmelodious sound - it's just snowballed from there. Bands took those ideas, and over the years have watered it down until it's just Metalcore breakdowns with poppy choruses that almost all sound the same. Either way, there have always been bands that have continued some form of the original sound through it all.
