05.02.14 | Hard to pick the ten best, but I would start with these:
Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Suede – Dog Man Star
Catherine Wheel – Chrome
|
zakalwe
05.02.14 | Cheers Pappy it was done off the cuff and as such it's not ranked, if it were Spiritualized would be top of that lot. |
ArsMoriendi
05.02.14 | Mine would be very different... probably would include:
Pixies - Bossanova
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
Ween - Chocolate and Cheese
Radiohead - OK Computer
Alice in Chains - Sap
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love

05.03.14 | Yeah, SD rules, although I wouldn't compare it to 10, since they're different genres. |

05.04.14 | I put Blur instead of Pulp because they (along with Suede) invented Britpop, and also I prefer MLIR to Different Class (even if I consider underwear to be one of the best songs ever). Yes: dubnobasswithmyheadman, ok computer, mezzanine, automatic for the people, temple of the dog etc... are beatiful albums, but for me these are better! |
danielito19
05.04.14 | who cares who invented it; Pulp is so much better. Sisters EP, This is Hardcore, and Different Class kick so much ass it's not even funny. |
NickLizard49
05.04.14 | Well the first of a genre is always the most important. Anyway Modern Life is Rubbish for me is pure genius. |
danielito19
05.04.14 | that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. just because someone did something first doesn't mean they did it best. |
NickLizard49
05.05.14 | In fact I didn't say "just because"! Anyway there are thousands of albums better than the Beatles'
albums, but they probably are considered to be the best band ever because they were one of the firsts!
And thousands of other artists have been especially praised for being the first band in their genre
(for example Joy Division for gothic rock, Ministry for industrial metal, Ride for shoegaze, Run DMC
for Hip-Hop, and many others). |
SaneTBP
05.05.14 | Of course, bands and artist get acclaim and fans for "being there first", but that's because it made their music new and exiting. It's not a mark of quality necessarily, but it can/could've been. After the thing has been done several times, though, it's not a new thing anymore (duh). After that it's up to the actual quality of the music, more than the inventiveness. Creativity and inventiveness is one thing, the quality and the enjoyability of the music is other, even though the two can be related to each other.
And uhh, The Beatles aren't a band that's so loved because of their experimentation (even though they had a fair share of that too), but more because of their songwriting talent. Music is subjective, so it's impossible to say that is there "thousands of albums better than the Beatles". Having that considered, isn't it kinda pointless to throw arguments like that without any reasoning? |
danielito19
05.05.14 | you said "the first of a genre is the most important"
which i took as you saying the first is the best. |
NickLizard49
05.06.14 | I'm exactly trying to say that, SaneTBP. I said it is the most important because the first is the most
influencial, but I didn't say "the best". Yes of course the subjectivity counts, but you must also
consider objectivity: the rating of an album must always be contestualized and this also means that
the fact that an album is really innovative, makes it to always be the most important (not necessarly
the best); if that album is also a beautiful album, it becomes "perfect". And it is for me Modern Life
Is Rubbish by Blur. Not only subjectivity must be considered. |
