What Is A Sputnikmusic? (aka Hi I'm Toad)

So I'm Toad, a new user here at old Sputnik. I want to know what's going on rexactly, like what's the basic Sputtiquette, what users I should know and look rinto, and obviously which albums I should listen to to get a decent background. rI have a few things I've noticed in general and I've listed them with my own rpersonal biases. List is pretty representative of where I am now - hopelessly rromantic 19 year old college student brushing off existential crises and whatnot. rCheers!
1The Flaming Lips

ME: Stumbling upon Yoshimi in 1001 albums you must hear before you die launched me beyond
the radio. Virgo Self-Esteem Broadcast is my favorite song-in-context-of-album Flips track. Think
Hit to Death is pretty underrated.
SPUTNIK: Didn't chose Yoshimi or Soft Bulliten because they seemed too obvious. Sputnik appears
to favor new outlooks and unconventional opinions - the consensus is generally known and nobody
really cares for reading it again.
2Gang Gang Dance
Eye Contact

ME: I flipping love synthesizers and unconventional hooks. The thick synth line on Mindkilla is the
sort of thing I drool over. Also I'm a pretty big fan of ambitious/pretentious album structures, so
this and Embryonic fit the bill with their interludes and epics.
SPUTNIK: Gang Gang Dance is an alternative-pop/dance record. Sputnik seems to really appreciate
alternative-pop in general - ie records that are catchy, fun, and yet boast some new ideas or
sounds. That's pretty awesome given I'm truly a fan of hooks and new takes on verse-chorus
3 Baths
Pop Music / False B-Sides

ME: I love the first half of this compilation and couldn't care less about the second half
(Damnation excluded.) i love the albums that work as a whole but have no problem salvaging
what i can from uneven records and leaving the rest behind. I'm also a sucker for beats and short,
essentially single-idea tracks.
SPUTNIK: I have a personal relationship to this record, but not many people here seem to have
listened to it. It's the sort of non-new-release someone would ideally review - an obscure record
that they have listened to extensively and have something to say about.
4Perfume Genius
Put Your Back N 2 It

ME: Too much reverb? Beauty as 'pointless?' I can understand these concepts from a critical
perspective but usually don't notice them as problems on my own, which makes me rate albums like
Put Your Back N 2 It, Teen Dream, Trouble Will Find Me, and probably The Antlers' new record
altogether too high.
SPUTNIK: A review here can often be grounds for someone to argue on a much broader topic - is
'too much reverb' actually a problem? Which prettiness is pointless, and which is critically effective?
etc. These reviews are probably best left to experienced reviewers or heavily edited before posting
by new reviewers.
Kid A

ME: This is my favorite album of all time. Each song is structured, produced, arranged, and performed
immaculately. I get lost trying to explain just what makes the record perfect to my ears.
SPUTNIK: Sputnikmusic isn't just a review website; it's a community and a place to just have a good
time talking about music. Sometimes you can just say "X ALBUM IS SO GOOD" and someone will
respond "I KNOW" in all caps and it's just a good time. Obviously, sputnik can be nasty and annoying
and whatnot, but in the end it's just a bunch of music lovers under a digital roof. That's pretty
6The Antlers

I just listened to this record. I rated a 4. I have no idea what I'm doing
- the album might grow on me, might fade, etc. But that's life.
Sometimes you just got to put it out there and roll with the changes.
Maybe all my blatherings on this list will be ignored, maybe they'll be
taken as annoying and pretentious, maybe they'll simply be boring.
But maybe someone will respond. And for now, that's enough. Cheers.
7Flying Lotus

Rest of list is just more records that represent my taste.

Underrated. love HudMo remix of Virus

U2 was really my only band from 3 yrs old to 14 yrs old.
10 M83
Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Nothing better for teenage midnight drives through RVA.
11Nick Drake
Pink Moon

It's worth retuning the guitar to play Road on a monday night.
12 Soundtrack
South Park (Original Soundrack)

Uncle Fucka = SOTY every year
13The Dismemberment Plan
Emergency & I

This is where I get bored of writing even short descriptions.
14Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85-92
15 Colin Stetson
History of New Warfare Vol. 2: Judges
16Shabazz Palaces
Black Up
Laminate Pet Animal
18These New Puritans
Field of Reeds
19Jon Hopkins
Street Halo
