03.24.14 | it's a horrible series, yea |
Ending
03.24.14 | Aww, you didn't like it? Shame, I thought that together they were fantastic. What was your biggest gripe? |

Ending
03.24.14 | 1 is the best album ever so you were damn close there. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | forced emotion (ghost girl wants to give her sister a wedding, lolwut), general "friendship is power" theme, blatant optimism, 'guy helping girls' trope, bad character design, boring cast
idk, I hate anime like that
you should watch Angel Beats if you haven't yet - it's like the same thing
//to be fair, I heard Clannad:After Story has a good ending but there's no way in hell I was willing to trek though ~40 episodes to get there - gave up on the series at episode 11 I think. |
Yotimi
03.24.14 | Havent seen after story, but Clannad was one of the dumbest things I've seen. Music was pretty cool tho (i like the ambient theme) |
Ending
03.24.14 | Damn dude the ending of Clannad: After Story is what makes the entire thing worth it. And the theme is family not really "friendship is power". |
Solbrave
03.24.14 | clannad after story ended my soul |
silentstar
03.24.14 | r.i.p |
Ending
03.24.14 | I personally enjoyed everything up until the final act of After Story myself but it was definitely the highlight of the series by a country mile. |
Whispered4tw
03.24.14 | silentstar, I'm not one to hate, but if that post was serious then you are full of shit and are just giving excuses to justify you not being able to personally interested by pretending that the series itself is generally flawed by giving these ridiculous inaccurate complaints
not saying it's perfect but come on now |
Ending
03.24.14 | Hey now, as much as I disagree with his opinion, it is nonetheless his opinion.
I think that the "forced emotion" was "forced" in the sense that yes, it's supposed to make you feel emotional. What's wrong with that being the point of something? And in the example silentstar uses there's actually a reason for that too if you ask me.
General "friendship is power" theme? It's there, yeah. And he didn't like that.
Blatant optimism? I mean, sure, why not. I didn't find it to be "blatantly optimistic" and I sure didn't find some parts of After Story to be that way but again, his opinion.
"Guy helping girls" trope is 100% on, and if it bothers you, then it bothers you.
Bad character design I would say is debatable but I think that Tomoya is one of the best characters in anime that I've seen to date.
Boring cast is again very much subjective but if you think that there's bad character design then you're bound to find the cast boring.
I don't agree with him either Whispered4tw but there are better ways to disagree with people. |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
03.24.14 | I guess silentstar has no soul. :/ |
silentstar
03.24.14 | "but if that post was serious then you are full of shit and are just giving excuses to justify you not being able to personally interested by pretending that the series itself is generally flawed by giving these ridiculous inaccurate complaints"
lol
why does everyone take criticism as a personal attack, when the target is not even the person themself? |
Whispered4tw
03.24.14 | not getting into this endless discussion thing, just putting this out
'Forced' emotion? The hell is that? Please give me an example of something that isn't forced and how it differentiates with something that apparently is forced. It's like saying 'uuugh, Lord of the Rings is really forcing this fantasy setting. All these dragons and orcs and shit'.
Friendship is power theme? Again, that's one of the main points of watching Clannad. You don't complain about silly comedy in a Jim Carry movie either because why bother in the first place if you're not a fan from the start?
Blatant optimism? Yeah sure, nothing bad happens in the series at all right. Totally.
"Guy helping girls", it has some parts containing that stuff yes. Not a reason to disregard the entire series at all.
The rest were typical 'not my taste so it's bad' complains regarding artwork and cast. True, you can have an opinion, but don't act like you're talking about objective flaws.
my 2 cents. not going further with this |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
03.24.14 | I think he's trying to say that your particular criticisms are a bit ridiculous, like for example "guy helping girls" trope. What? You mean guys, even if they're fictional, can't help girls? Seems a bit antisocial, don't you think? I will admit that the female characters in Clannad are not shining examples of feminism, but come on man, we're all human beings here, aren't we? We all need help at some point. :/ |
Yotimi
03.24.14 | I just dont want to watch a girl make stars for 20 episodes. And lol that basketball episode |
Whispered4tw
03.24.14 | I think it's more like the noticeable pattern of 'girl with problem>guy comes in>solves it' that's indeed repeated a couple of time in the series.
and btw, not feeling personally attacked at all. what made you assume that? perhaps i went a bit overboard with the full of shit thing, but it really was a bit of a dumb comment. |
Ending
03.24.14 | @BeneaththeDarkOcean
When he says the "guy helping girls" trope he's talking about the fact that lots of slice of life school romance/drama/comedy series employ a male lead that is put into situations where he must help a group of girls. And he's right that it's a trope and that Clannad does make use of it. However After Story does not for the most part.
@silentstar
I think it just has to do with the fact that your first comment was a baseless criticism, and then your follow-up comment comes across as less subjective than it actually is. I mean after the "idk, I hate anime like that" it becomes pretty clear that you're speaking subjectively but sometimes people just don't like people disliking what they like. Happens. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | so I was thinking maybe I was wrong and went on youtube to search up the first few episodes
holy shit is this bad
wtf, I'm cringing really hard
like, if you're still in high school and enjoying this, then good for you but this is as bad as I remembered it to be
also, forced is when a show is pushing for you to feel something by extending situations a bit too far in the emotional realm - like I said, a ghost girl who can't get over a promise she made to her sister? seems like a damn good recipe to get people crying over nothing. the ghost and her sister were shitty, boring characters anyway, so not sure about the hype
something that's not forced - watch uchouten kazoku and see how they deal with the loss of a loved one |
Ending
03.24.14 | Uchouten Kazoku is on my Plan To Watch right now. |
Ending
03.24.14 | You should just pick After Story back up at the very least. Like I said before, its final act is what really makes the show great but I think you'll hate the last episode. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | "Uchouten Kazoku is on my Plan To Watch right now."
nice. it's an extremely refreshing series and it's perfect length too (only 13 epidoes).
do you have a mal account? |

03.24.14 | Awesome, we seem to have different tastes but that's cool. You should watch the other three Monogatari series, given that you gave Bakemonogatari an 8/10. I mean I'm biased because as you can see by my ratings my only 10s go to Monogataris but you know. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | haha, that show was way too exhausting though
I had to pause constantly to read the text on the flash screens, so not sure if I'm ready for that again.
I'm planning on watching Katanagatari though (show by the same people) |
Ending
03.24.14 | You're not necessarily supposed to/supposed to be able to read the text in those quick frames. Plus, the most recent series was amazing. My favourite ever as of now. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | that was my favourite part though, since it was generally very witty/informative and helped give the show some substance
my brother finished the series as well and said it was pretty good - might finish it when I run out of anime to watch |
mindleviticus
03.24.14 | clannad was pretty funny but clannad after story was fucking ridiculously sad |
mindleviticus
03.24.14 | just when you think after story can't get any sadder, it fucking just tears you apart and then... its
ridiculous ending
I was crying my eyes out |
Ending
03.24.14 | What did you change your name from mindleviticus? Unless you didn't and I'm just going crazy.
And yeah I cried pretty hard at one specific part (without spoiling too much, sunflower field) but not from sadness. However it was very tragic as a whole, its final act. One of the best shows I've seen in recent memory. |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | Afterstory rules big |
Whispered4tw
03.24.14 | That whole part in the sunflower field till the end when they are on the train made me tear up.
Oh and if we're doing recommendations, go watch Phantom ~Requiem of the Phantom~. Quite an overlooked gem if you ask me. |
CalculatingInfinity
03.24.14 | I was thinking of watching this actually, I haven't watched anime in a year :/ |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | I was really enjoying Ace Of Diamond but I'm well behind on that now but other than that yeah it's been a while |
silentstar
03.24.14 | all I do is watch anime these days - they are short and sweet and have a good mix of things I like: music, stories and visuals |
BlueW
03.24.14 | CLANNAD AFTER STORY IS FEELY YES, BUT IF ANYONE WANTS REAL FEELS GO WATCH ANY MAKOTO SHINKAI ANIME |
silentstar
03.24.14 | his movies are beautiful. I think I've seen most of them already (5 cm/s, garden of words, promised place, distant star) |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | This thread reminded me that MAL existed, It's been a while.

I loved Garden Of Words @silent, mostly the animation style he uses. |

03.24.14 | one of my favorite anime series |
silentstar
03.24.14 | added you Pheromone!
our tastes don't seem to match up for the most part but you like some pretty cool anime (brotherhood, phantom, bacanno!, gto) |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | What's your MAL account?, think I might have declined by mistake.
Still haven't finished Phantom yet, didn't particularly like the second half as much as the first. |

03.24.14 | I've found myself with a lot of time and a lot of series I want to watch but today I just started Madoka Magica and after that will probably be conquering Uchouten Kaizoku, Baccano!, Durarara!!, and Steins;Gate after I finish Madoka. No particular order.
Question for you guys: what shows if any would you recommend in a similar vein of Clannad and Clannad: After Story? I've watched Toradora! and AnoHana and have heard plenty (read: too much) about Angel Beats! but plan on watching that too nonetheless.
myanimelist.net/animelist/AndrewRK for reference. Not sure when I'll find something as "complete" as the Clannad duo for a while though. |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | Kanon 2006 is a pretty similar show all in all, same company, same cliches, not quite as good but about as emotional. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | the community on mal seems to think the show Air is very similar
you might want to check that out, I suppose
and yea, Angel Beats is like the same thing - you'd probably like that one |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | Silent mate check Texhnolyze if you have Ergo Proxy at 10/10 |
mindleviticus
03.24.14 | kanon is not nearly as emotional |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | idk mate when that one black haired chick stuck a knife in her stomach that was pretty cool. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | heard of Texhnolyze but also heard it makes no sense on first watch
scared it might turn into another 'Lain experience' - interesting premise that fails to deliver without repeated watches |
Pheromone
03.24.14 | It did take a while for me to get the concept. The first episode has almost no dialogue and the first 4 episodes are very confusing but things start piecing together for a very rewarding watch. If you're confused at all past episode 4 just message me and I reckon I'll be able to explain it up til that point. |
silentstar
03.24.14 | haha, sweet. I'll add it to my "plan-to-watch" list. probably get to it sometime after exams are done ~may-ish~ |
Crawl
03.24.14 | Air and Kanon are much much weaker versions of Clannad, I'd say. Both are incredibly similar. Btw, here's my MAL: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/-Ein |
Ending
03.24.14 | I've heard that Air and Kanon are similar but not as good several times too. I feel that a lot of the reason for that is because they get either 1/3 or 1/2 the time to develop their characters (respectively, approximations).
Clannad was more or less a fairly typical high school slice of life with some romance, drama, comedy, and of course some supernatural elements.
Clannad: After Story though did what I wish every high school slice of life/romance/drama/comedy etc. would do, and that's provide exactly that: an "after story". It takes us past the high school days and allows the characters develop into adulthood and really adds a layer of depth almost unparalled in the genre.
Been listening to the Dango song and its variations along with the Clannad: After Story opening for what feels like an eternity already. Seriously brings the emotions of the show back albeit subdued. |
silentstar
03.25.14 | since I'll never watch the show, does anything happen with the robot you see in the first few episodes out in the field? that part caught my interest because of how natural it felt |
Ending
03.25.14 | I won't spoil it because other people may see it potentially, but it is very significant and the answer is yes. |
