5 Reasons Why Bjork Rules

As of now, Bjork still remains my favorite music artist of all time. I find almost all of her albums to be at least fantastic and two of her albums to be completely perfect. For the skeptics, this is why Bjork is so damn awesome.

Medulla

Eclecticism: While much of Bjork's work is firmly rooted in electronica music, she's
extended her reach to many other genres like jazz, alternative rock, classical, and
even elements of folk. While her first few albums were mostly alternative dance
albums with some experiments here and there (especially with a certain big band
number), things changed with Homogenic. A mix of trip-hop and classical strings
was brought in to reinvent Bjork's style, and from that album forward, she gave us
one successful experiment after another. I just love how diverse her music is in
general.

Breakaway: It's tough to escape a former band's shadow sometimes, but Bjork did
just that by embarking on her solo career and becoming more successful than
anyone else in The Sugarcubes ever was. I find it cool that Bjork was able to break
away from her post-punk/pop-rock roots and redefine her sound and image so well.
Plus, she was a way better singer for The Sugarcubes than Einar, who was the
male singer of the group.

Musical Environments: It seems like pretty much every Bjork song has its own
musical environment, a place that almost seems like it could be real despite simply
being created aurally. The atmosphere is obviously what contributes to this,
creating mood pieces that mentally transport you to different places. Whenever I
want to take a nice stroll around the town or in a natural area like a forest, it's
always a beautiful experience to listen to Bjork on my MP3 and really take in my
surroundings. Powerful stuff.

Her Vocals: Obviously this was gonna be a high entry! Yeah, her vocals are
amazing. With an elastic vocal range and probably one of the most unique singing
voices ever, Bjork's vocals fit her eclectic music brilliantly. She's brimming with
personality and you can tell that she has a serious amount of passion in her singing,
particularly during a song's chorus or general climax. She also uses a wide variety of
dynamics to convey the mood she's going for in a song, using her soft vocals just
as much as being loud and bombastic and anywhere in between. Overall, a
wonderful singer.

Nostalgia: This might seem like a really weird thing to put as #1, but this is what I
mean. Tying into the "Musical Environments" reason, Bjork's music just has a certain
power to make me feel younger again. To make me feel like I'm back in my
elementary school or junior high during my more reflective moments back then.
Things get so much more complicated when you get older, but to me, Bjork's work
represents a simpler and more graceful passage of time in the past (for me, at
least). It's really tough for me to explain this reason... it's just there. I always think
of my childhood and my old friends and how our paths diverged. I think of where I'm
living and how it's changed since I first got here. Maybe it's more in Bjork's music
than her vocals, but something about her compositions just gives me chills and
makes me really stop and think about how far I've gone in life and the steps it took
to get there.
