Old Band's Middle Years Generally Are Mediocre?

I've noticed, and this may just be an opinionated question, is why do older bands start to run out of ideas in their middle years compared to their early and newer material? For example, the below artists mentioned and the albums surrounding that LP. You can just see these artists on sputnik and see their average rating compared to their old and new material.
1Queen
Hot Space
2Black Sabbath
Seventh Star
3Deep Purple
Slaves and Masters
4Van Halen
OU812
5Bob Dylan
Knocked Out Loaded
