01.26.14 | List is general sort of range of tones I'd like to be able to cover well (I know, not super expansive)
and tones that I like: the sort of lows from Opeth and Ikuinen Kaamos to the highs of Haken and Scale
the Summit and in-between. | NordicMindset
01.26.14 | Silversun Pickups | AtomicWaste
01.26.14 | hurr hurr | DominionMM1
01.26.14 | I prefer passives. the sd jb is solid for the bridge. | ZombicidalMan
01.26.14 | Out of your choices, I'd personally pick the Dinky. I just like Jackson guitars.
I agree with Dominion though, passives are awesome. I'd suggest a Duncan Distortion, Dimarzio X2N, Bareknuckle Warpig, or a Lace Nitro Hemi. If you really like the tone Cynic gets though, you'd probably be into an EMG 81/85 combo. | AtomicWaste
01.26.14 | I think passives would be my preference as well, since I know I'll fuck up in having 9volts around, but if I can get something next level out of blackouts or something, I'd be up for giving them a shot at the very least.
What kind of stuff do you play with the JBs, Dominion? | AtomicWaste
01.26.14 | I do really like Cynic's tone for soloing and their spacy kinda grooves, but I also want that rich, gloomy sound you can hear on Blackwater Park. I'm probably not knowledgeable enough about the electronics to know if they're exclusive sounds, but I think that's what I'm shooting for (with a clean tone that can soar like Scale the Summit.
I'll have to look into some of those, though, for sure! | DominionMM1
01.26.14 | I put the Jb/jazz combo in my shitty esp ltd. mostly fuck around with 80s/early 90s thrash with that one. i've got sd 59s in my
jackson which i find to be a little more versatile. | AtomicWaste
01.26.14 | What do you find the 59s to be good for? Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just really trying to get a baseline of what's better for what and where I should aim to set myself up at - always easier to get that info firsthand, you know? | DominionMM1
01.26.14 | well they don't have quite the amount of crunch as the jb. they actually have a sound similar to some of those old gibson pickups.
but the reality is that the amp you're using is gonna shape your tone waaaayyy more than any pickup you choose. i mean you're not gonna get akerfeldt's tone just by using the same pickups that he does. | Solaire
01.26.14 | Thought this was a list for pickup lines at first. | AtomicWaste
01.26.14 | Oh, for sure. I get a decent (not great) sound out of the stock pickups on my cheap ibanez using the right amp modeling, settings, and effects, but if I'm gonna go spending hundreds on new pickups, I want to make sure they're as close to what I want as possible.
It's the first time I've made such a venture, so I imagine I'm not going to hit the nail right on the head right away, but I always figure it's best to gather as much info as possible before dropping the cash on it. | Athom
01.26.14 | For hot humbuckers I have some old 90's stock couple hundred dollar schecter C body guitar that I wouldn't trade for the life of me. It gives everything you're playing through an ugly tone, but it's so punchy and tight that I've used it for years for recording rather than the more expensive and better quality guitars that I've owned. Sometimes you just find a diamond in the rough that suits your individual needs. But if you're gonna swap pick ups, I'd go with those Lace's that were rec'd earlier in the thread. Lace's high gain pick ups are some of the best in the business and have a bit more personality than SDs or Dimarzios.

01.26.14 | Okay I was gonna say Bare Knuckles, but since they are quite expensive I would say Dimarzios or Duncans. As someone said earlier, the JB/Jazz or JB/59 set is timeless. | AtomicWaste
01.27.14 | I can dig it - thanks for the suggestions, guys! I went out and bought the project guitar for this one just a little while ago. It's an LTD with muddy pickups but a really nice finish and a fast, smooth neck. I figured since I'm replacing the pups it probably won't be a big deal. Floyd Rose and all the standard bells and whistles. Double hum setup so I should have this all sorted by the next paycheck or so to get it going. | Bergtatt
01.30.14 | Lundgren Lundgren Lundgren SO MANY TIMES!!!!! | Bergtatt
01.30.14 | Seriously. So many bands on your list use them. | omnipanzer
01.30.14 | I'd get the good ones. | Bergtatt
01.30.14 | (well, maybe Lace for the bridge) | krazytopher
02.02.14 | Dimarzio titans!!!! | theacademy
02.02.14 | get a ps4 u loser | NordicMindset
02.02.14 | Use your money on something elze | JustinKing
02.02.14 | I've owned each brand and model of guitar you're looking at, and I must say my ESP is probably my favorite. I'm not one for changing pickups, so I'm only giving you my opinion based on their stock pickups. The Ibanez is pretty versatile, and has a bit of a more prominent bass tone than the others. The ESP is probably the most balanced of all of them, with a very solid and clear tone. The Jackson has probably the best neck of all of these, normally very flat and fast, with really good action, but best for distorted tones. The Schecter, though this may have just been the one I had, had a fairly weak distorted tone, very dry with not much sustain. Though I did try another one in a shop, and it sounded much better. Also, I'm another one that's all about passives. | JustinKing
02.02.14 | Fuck, didn't realize this was an old list. | bloc
02.02.14 | Haha, it's not THAT old |
