| Jac's Top 25 Of 2013
So yeah I know it's not even December but Sputnik is always quite rpremature about this sort of rthing, so I figured I'd join in. | 25 | | Defeated Sanity Passages Into Deformity
Probably the weakest album from Defeated Sanity in all honesty, which I blame
squarely on the brick-walled production. Their signature schizophrenic riffage still
elevates this above 95% of brutal death however. | 24 | | Ghostface Killah Twelve Reasons to Die
One of the few hip-hop albums I bothered to listen to but I enjoyed it a hell of a lot. | 23 | | Autechre Exai
An album that should be higher but isn't simply because I've yet to properly figure
out it's little nuances. By virtue of it's length and Confield-like juxtaposition of
ideas, this is difficult listen, but one that gets more rewarding the more you spin it. | 22 | | Dark Tranquillity Construct
A nice return to form for the melodeath legends. Interestingly, this album continues
the sound they explored on We Are The Void but simply does it better, promising
release. | 21 | | Cerekloth In the Midst of Life We Are In Death
A dissonant, churning maelstrom of riffs and dynamic shifts. Grew off me ever so
slightly on repeat listens but still merits a spot on the end of year rankings. | 20 | | Burial Rival Dealer
Another excellent EP from Burial, slightly more upbeat than we've come to expect from him in a places. | 19 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
I can already hear Pleb shouting "sell-out!" but I'm not going to pretend to hate
this. | 18 | | Grave Miasma Odori Sepulcrorum
Evil, old-school-revival death that manages to stand out in a crowd. | 17 | | Katalepsy Autopsychosis
This was an early contender for death metal AOTY before 2013 turned out to be so
rife with quality stuff. Not for traditionalists but incredibly brutal, and arguably the
best thing the slam death niche genre has produced. | 16 | | Black Crown Initiate Song of the Crippled Bull
Yeah it's overproduced and I'll be the first to admit it's queefy as shit, but these
guy's definitely know what they're doing the song-writing department. Promising
band. | 15 | | Frigoris Wind
Overlooked black metal album that seems to have gotten no further attention past
it's release date, probably in light of other releases stealing it's thunder. | 14 | | Ludovico Einaudi In a Time Lapse
This album's true position is a probably a little higher given I still haven't totally
absorbed it. Less immediate than Divenire but still ever so pleasant. | 13 | | Gris A lame Enflammee, lame Constellee
Extremely easy to get into despite the monstrous length. Powerful and poignant. | 12 | | Vali Skogslandskap
Just a sublimely executed instrumental folk album which avoids succumbing to the
cheesy cliches associated with the genre. | 11 | | Tim Hecker Virgins
A deceptively immediate album (if that makes any sense), tantalising you with
pretty soundscapes only to reveal itself as much so more once you flesh out it's
minutiae. | 10 | | Summoning Old Mornings Dawn
Generally not a fan of this type of black metal, but if I am to adore any album of
this particular style from this year, it may as well be by the band that perfected
said style. Plus Key digs them so they must be good. | 9 | | Entropia (PL) Vesper
Kinda like Sunbather but much more engaging over an entire listen, if you dug the
former you have no reason not to check this out. | 8 | | Symptom Opulent Atrocity
A crushing old school death metal album that doesn't necessarily do anything new,
but does what it does in a stellar enough way to still astound. | 7 | | Zealotry The Charnel Expanse
A criminally overlooked album which pays substantial tribute to Demilich while still
coming across as innovative and original. | 6 | | Rhian Sheehan Stories From Elsewhere
Probably the twinkliest, most pleasant thing I've heard all year. It's beauty is in it's
simplicity, while the compositions won't leave you in awe, the attention to
aesthetic detail will. | 5 | | Jon Hopkins Immunity
A huge grower that will continue to grow even after this list has been made. I'm
generally a fan of the more ethereal, drawn out tracks, but the beat-driven ones
such as the stellar opener more than hold their own in album full of highlights. | 4 | | Obliteration Black Death Horizon
This album is pure maniacal terror, and Sindre Solem has solidified himself as one of
the best vocalists in death metal. Hyperion can rest easy knowing these guys have
gotten the recognition they rightfully deserve. | 3 | | Gorguts Colored Sands
It wasn't really a question of whether or not this album would make my end of year
list, but how far up it would be. Despite the recent backlash and claims of
"overhype", this remains one of the best albums of the year irrespective of genre
and represents one of the best come backs in metal history. | 2 | | Sigur Ros Kveikur
Did not expect to enjoy this anywhere near as much as I did. It's delightfully
accessible execution and brooding, almost sinister at times, atmosphere has
cemented it as - dare I say - my favourite Sigur Ros album. | 1 | | Ulcerate Vermis
While I don't think this band will ever top Everything is Fire, Vermis is still a
exemplary effort from a band that I consider to be the very best in the scene
today. A lot denser and sludgier than previous efforts while retaining Ulcerate's core
sound, I look forward to seeing the direction this band takes in the coming years. | |

11.29.13 | we are musical twins | Solaire
11.29.13 | Musical twins only help stroke one's ego, I find. I like to talk to those with different tastes to help broaden my views. Used to think The All-American Rejects were the best band in the world, and so did some of my old friends. | Keyblade
11.29.13 | Or maybe it's just cool seeing someone with similar tastes to yourself | Solaire
11.29.13 | That is true, just don't talk with them exclusively. You'll never learn about new music :) | BigPleb
