Atomic's Top 10 Songs Of 2013
So far, so good. My top 10 songs of the year so far as ranked by my
personal enjoyment of them.
The quirk and grand prog flair that I've been missing and craving for quite some
time. Pomp and circumstance that are self-warranting and as beautiful as it is
strange. I have nothing but love for this album and this song stands out as my
favorite for the year.
"Come to Light"
Hot on the heals of a great outing in previous album Of Whom I Always Think,
Damascus continued to innovate and shock with album opener "Come to Light" on
their newest album Heights. Embodying all that the light and shadows of post-rock
can show us, the track seamlessly moves between weighty lows and chime-like
highs and keys that coast and flow through an 8 minute journey of everything
positive post-rock has to offer.
|3||The Darien Venture|
A Kite, A Key and A Storm
"Ho! Criminal Face"
The energetic, provocative, and evocative nature of The Darien Venture's "math
pop" performance throughout A Kite, A Key and A Storm make it an album full of
hits I enjoy from cover to cover, with "Ho! Criminal Face" being on of the most
catchy and interesting songs I've had the pleasure of singing along with this year.
The Hands That Thieve
"Toe to Toe"
Inspirational, fun, fluid, and full of varying sounds from every corner of the septet
from low brass to soft, groovy drumming, "Toe to Toe" is the pinnacle of soft highs
and aggressive lows that showcases Streetlight Manifesto's musical maturation.
Frantic banjo and fiddle folk rock that carries a steep and aggressive downhill
motion with clever and modern lyrics set to crooning and cracking mountainman folk
vocals. Some of the most beautiful and chilling combinations of lyrics and music
have come from this album that not too many have heard.
"Dreaming in Space"
Jash did it again with Leafhouse, yet it somehow managed to fly below the radar
significantly more than iNTRiKeT. It was hard to pick a specific song from this
album, but I find the repeated, dreamy echoes of "Everytime I see you I know
instantly I'm dreaming" have haunted me in the most positive way since first
listening to this album in June
|7||The Dear Hunter|
A song of self-reflecting introversion and eventual moving on, as with the most of
Migrant, this is a track that was very symbolic of just under the first half of my
personal 2013. "An Escape" throws the hardest punch of the album's tracks and is
also its catchiest, making it another instant favorite for me.
Psychic Temple II
Bizarre vocals are the perfect compliment for the bizarre jazz of trucker-by-day-
musician-by-night Chris Schlarb and the airy spirit of freshness that is Psychic
Temple II. The harmonies and bright and punchy strumming combine with the early
rising Eastern moans and late stutters of this track to make it an easy standout.
"Dancing With Endless Love"
Despite my disappointment in sophomore album Living Mirrors' failure to live up to
the band's fluid, beautiful, and transcendental debut, Journey Through The Hidden
Garden (the overuse of the heavy djent tone on Living Mirrors as a whole is
appalling), "Dancing With Endless Love" was the one track that caught my ear and
pulled me into listening to this album over and over for redemption. If they'd only
continued with this direction instead of chomping on the low end like rabid dogs.
|10||Big D and the Kids Table|
While Stroll brought back the energy and strut of my favorite Big D outing, Fluent in
Stroll, "Pinball" easily fits the same mold as "Shining On" in creating a light, fun,
boppy mood with fun lyrics and a simple and breezy attitude.
How do I list?
Forgot a link for "Pinball":
Only 10?
1 is a really good song. My favorite from that album. Not impressed so much with 4 and 7.
Just trimmed it down's all. And ya dig whatcha dig. Glad to hear you like Cockroach King, though! It's
an absolute topper for me.
but where are the pecan tree and brennisteinn???
I know the rest of the world really loved Sunbather, but I didn't particularly care for it. Maybe I'll re-listen.
it was exactly the album i wanted by them. simply perfection
wheres "the usher" lol its song of the year
ugh entry level list
Eat my ass :)
Really enjoyed a lot of this man!! Good list
Check out Kafka - Locktender, and Recursions - Cryptodira
4 is great but outro track on that is one of the band's best
cover girl- the ongoing concept
ba al chiligon- milo
The battle for clear sight- larry and his flask
Didn't really dig Kafka except for a few moments. I'll check the rest - Calc knows my taste so I'll prob dig that stuff.
Aziz - Yeah, I love the closer too (and the whole album pretty much) but Toe to Toe has got to be my favorite.
Cockroach King is the worst song on the mountain...
"wheres "the usher" lol its song of the year"
^I can agree with that.
"Cockroach King is the worst song on the mountain"
Take your bullshit back to grade school, boy
Props for 1, man.
4 is always a skip for me, definitely one of the weakest songs on the album.
Severely dislike the intro and outro to Cockroach King, but the rest is gold.
I Appear Missing by QOTSA is song of the year for sure.
I assumed there would be 25 more wonderbread comments by the time I hit submit wtf
But graceless and wonderbread aren't even the best songs on their respective albums
