.

not very helpful huh
anime is a genre so first explain the kind of tv shows and movies that you're interested in, and then you can get some good recs. also maybe age and whether or not you're open to japanese subs will also make a huge impact |
Eloriaz
09.26.13 | @toxin: Sorry, I didn't realize how unclear my request was :P
Well, I'm 21. I don't speak/read Japanese at all so of course I am looking for English audio or subs. And as for movies I listen to a lot of things because I love cinema, from Stanley Kubrick to Paul Thomas Anderson to Christopher Nolan. But I guess Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy, Historical, would fit my interests. |
toxin.
09.26.13 | i meant yeah if you're ok with reading subtitles cuz some pepole demand english audio
ok what are a few of your favorite tv shows too? i'm trying to get a feel for whether you're looking for something lighthearted and fun (but maybe there isn't too much depth) or something that's heavier and perhaps more thematically bold/ eloquent.
-----------------------------------------------
right off the bat i think you might be interested in shinsekai yori, it's like a dystopian sci-fi/fantasy novel with lots of horror elements where human civilization was torn apart by the emergence of telekinetic powers. we see the remnants of humans living in tribal villages.
it starts off following children but there are time skips as the characters grow older. it's starts off pretty broad, but around episode 12 or so the plot narrows down. it's based off of an actual sci-fi novel, so there are no anime tropes to be wary of. |
Eloriaz
09.26.13 | Oh sure, if it's Japanese audio/English subs I'm okay with that ^_^
As for TV Shows, I'm lacking a bit more in that department. But let's just say: drama-wise, I loved Downton Abbey. As for comedy: Arrested Development. Sci-Fi: Battlestar Galactica. Fantasy: Game of Thrones. As long as there is a universe and characters with personality.
Thanks a bunch for your time btw, super appreciated :) |

09.26.13 | Dude, you gotta watch Akira and Ghost in the Shell! Those are classics. Try Princess Mononoke and Sword of a Stranger too. If youre into Black/Death Metal, watch Detroit Metal City, it's f***in' hilarious. |
toxin.
09.26.13 | since i'm going to bed i'll just rec a few other things:
coboy bebop (space bounty hunters deal with their past, set to a jazzy soundtrack)
fullmetal alchemist (set in a world where alchemy became the leading science instead of physics, it's a steampunk show about 2 brothers who commit the ultimate taboo and try to revive their mother. they pay a serious price.*) psycho pass (haven't seen it so read this: http://myanimelist.net/anime/13601/Psycho-Pass)
the tatami galaxy (nameless protag just wants to experience the rose-colored life of a college student, but his friend is always dragging him to shenanigans. rapid dialogue that's hard to follow at times but a really good show for college students)
fate/zero (battle royale of a group of mages who call legendary spirits to fight to the death. winner gets to make a wish. horrible expository first episode but good after)
death note (bored high school genius finds notebook that kills, he enters a cat-and-mouse game with the world's greatest detective)
*there are two versions, the 2003 anime called Fullmetal Alchemist and the 2009 remake called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. i'd say watch the 2003 one, because it's darker and heavier. however, brotherhood is probably 'better' so if you want something dark but still with a sense of humor [e.g. something like avatar: the last airbender) it's a good choice. the original FMA improvised the ending because the source material (manga) wasn't finished, brotherhood is faithful to the manga but rushes through the shared content between the two. both are standalone though.

09.26.13 | as far as films go, i'd second anything by miyazaki. princess mononoke and spirited away are classics. i'd also recommend for you satoshi kon's work. his movie paprika inspired inception, though i haven't seen his stuff so i can't comment personally. makoto shinkai's stuff is just visually some of the best artwork out there, try 5 centimeters per second. it is almost a bit of a non-story but god it's beautiful to look at it and has an interesting message.

09.26.13 | Personally I perfer SHAFT shows such as Bakemonogatari, Katanagatari, Puella Magi Madoka Magika,
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei to name a few. Try these, SHAFT productions have their own appeal compared
to anime in general, are very original and full of symbolism. Not to mention Akio Watanabe is the
animation director for bakemonogatari, his work has won several awards which was the case of the
eroge Grisaia no Kajitsu as he animated the opening and brings together at times OPs that connect
with the plot, even featuring noteworthy execution.
Furthermore his character design is quite enjoyable, original and always connects with the character
in a deeper level. Shaft productions are usually worth it if you are obcessive with nooks and
crannies as there is a lot of detail, not in animation since there are studios that are better
tecnically, but with the way they normally choose to tell a story.
There is also EF if you like melodramatic romance, and it has shaft's label too.
Then out of shaft the ones i recommend is Yoshitoshi Abe's work, Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane
Renmei and Urobochi Gen's Psycho Pass (he also wrote Madoka Magika that I named before under the
shaft label).
Other noteworthy experiences are Welcome to the NHK, since you're not very familiar with the otaku
culture and don´t know how social life works for shut-ins, watch this one, you'll learn most of
what's there to know about the subject, then there's also Garden of Sinners which features STUNNING
animation work. In my opinion, even after fate/zero and the likes, Garden of sinners still remains
Ufotable's top work. It also includes great fighting scenes, featuring loads of dynamism. It's
trully a feast for the eyes. And also for the mind since the story is really complicated and the
movies are not in chronological order making you think about what you have just seen. |

09.26.13 | EasyMode DX mentioned Katanagatari. That one is awesome; it's about a swordsman who's body is his sword. He's lived alone on an island with only his sister, and is coerced into helping a girl look for the 12 Demon Blades of Japan. It's VERY silly, and the action scenes are amazing.
If you're a sci-fi/cyberpunk fan, Ghost In The Shell is a must, without a doubt.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Paranoia Agent, an amazing show about a detective who is trying to discover the reason behind a string of attacks on seemingly random people by a kid with a bat. Seems silly, but it's not a comedy, and each episode forces you to watch the next one to see what happens.
And then there's my favorite, Fooly Cooly (FLCL). It's actually really hard to describe this one, so I'll describe only a bit of the first episode. A kid walks home after talking to his semi-girlfriend (who used to be the girlfriend of his older brother), and gets hit in the head with a bass guitar swung by a woman on a Vespa scooter. Then he's stuck with a protrusion in his head that eventually pops out and turns into a robot with an old TV as a head who ends up living with him along with the girl who hit him to begin with. Sounds weird, right? Just know that if you actually decide to watch it, it is one of the most (seemingly) disjointed and ridiculous animes you'll ever see...but it's a complete story, not just random craziness. There's a solid allegory underneath that zaniness that gives the show its emotional heart, and the characters are actually characters (and good ones, at that), not just tools for gags. It's also only 6 episodes long, if that helps.
So yeah...my recommendations: Katanagatari, Ghost In The Shell, Paranoia Agent, and Fooly Cooly (FLCL). |

EasyModeDX
09.28.13 | personally I perfer using nyaa.eu and download Horrible Subs via torrent. You can get video files with 1080p and flac audio on pretty much any recent anime you can think of. And to watch Garden of Sinners, trust me, you'll want 1080p, worth every pixel |
EasyModeDX
09.28.13 | but obviously we are talking about a series seven movies here... you'll need a lot of hard drive space. |

EasyModeDX
09.28.13 | "flac on anime is like the biggest waste of space"
Completely true. I mentioned FLAC because someone might still be interested even though I think it's useless for this kind of purpose. Even 1080p is sometimes a waste, especially if you're watching something with a low budget production. But other than that, considering the download speed for torrent, I think it makes up. Because it's not only about quality, but by searching under nyaa.eu, you can pick your favourite fansubber's work for something you wanna watch instead of watching it online, you have no control over the group that made those subs. |
Eloriaz
09.28.13 | Thanks Shuyin & EasyMode. I will bookmark those sites as well.
And yeah, I can't imagine how much space flac + anime must take. I personally use a laptop and its hard drive is almost full already =| I'll have to buy an external hard drive soon....... or delete a lot of movies until then!
BTW, any reason for the "Horrible Subs" tag haha? I saw that on ThePirateBay and I was curious ^_^ |

also i have hyouka in 1080p and it is godly, there are a few series that look stunning in HD or 720p (all makoto shinkai movies for example) but for most, i settle for w/e is a tolerable streaming experience (i think they're usually 360p which sorta sucks but if it's a meh-looking series then who gafs) |

09.29.13 | why not? |
EasyModeDX
09.29.13 | Uh, horrible subs just happens to be my fansub group of choice, not much to it actually, I just think they do a great job on their subs, sometimes I lookout for coalgirls subs, because they tend to have a better selection of movies, while horrible subs keep their work more on series rather than movies.
I actually remember back at the time when I was begining to get into anime I'd get brazillian subs, but nothing can beat the english subbing groups, no matter how ingrained brazillian work is on the subtitle department.
And np really, I have no MAL account nor anything of the sort, but i've been a bit of a geek in this kind of expertise for some years now so if you have any doubts, need anything, let me know. |
pedro70512
09.29.13 | Some favorites of mine are Soul Eater (adventure), Spice & Wolf (slice of life), Rosario + Vampire (adventure/harem), and Death Note (thriller). I usually can't do subs...too distracting. |
