07.24.13 Observations

Observations

Appy polly loggies for the pretentious title, here are some of the albums that matter most to me.
1Opeth
Still Life

Pretty good
2Opeth
Morningrise

Not all that polished, but atmospherically it's the most raw representation of what I like about music.
3Opeth
Deliverance
4Keep of Kalessin
Armada

Armada has a song which changes from blistering black metal into a spanish style flamenco passage and back to black metal - it doesn't get much more awesome than that
5Keep of Kalessin
Kolossus
6Keep of Kalessin
Reptilian
7Immortal
At the Heart of Winter

An ancient relic lost somewhere beyond the wall. Probably my favourite example of straight grim black metal (albeit some thrash influence)
8Immortal
Pure Holocaust

If this is pure holocaust, where was I in 1939?
9Dark Tranquillity
The Gallery

A winding walk through the gallery, unable to ignore the elegant craftsmanship decorating the high walls, with tapestries of beautiful patterns weaving around sphinxes that flank opposite sides of the chamber.
10Dark Tranquillity
Projector
11Iron Maiden
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

As unique as Maiden ever got; it's a spellbinding experience.
12Iron Maiden
The Number of the Beast
13Mournful Congregation
The Monad of Creation
14Mournful Congregation
The June Frost
15Shape of Despair
Angels of Distress

This album was all I listened to (literally) for about four months. It is magnificent - slow, majestic, pleading, tragic, hopeful. It is an experience unlike any other, and is, in my opinion, the greatest doom metal album available.
16 Shape of Despair
Illusion's Play

One time I listened to Still-Motion stoned and it was one of the few times I literally forgot who I was.
17Symphony X
The Divine Wings of Tragedy

Powerful, virtuosic guitar playing, interlaced with keys as heavenly as chariots. While not without its share of cheese, it's absolutely enchanting.
18Symphony X
V: The New Mythology Suite
19Children of Bodom
Hatebreeder

Feel this shit man, feel those neoclassical interludes
20Children of Bodom
Follow the Reaper

Ignore Alexi's vocals as best you can
21Anaal Nathrakh
In the Constellation of the Black Widow
22Anaal Nathrakh
Hell is Empty and All the Devils are Her
23Moonsorrow
Kivenkantaja

Immersive, otherworldly atmosphere brought forth by a folky brand of black metal. Long epic tracks require patience and diligence. Its basically Game of Thrones set to music.
24Moonsorrow
V: Havitetty

Two songs, half an hour each. Bathe in it on a rainy day.
25Necrophagist
Epitaph
26Dark Funeral
Diabolis Interium
27Abyssic Hate
Suicidal Emotions

It looks bad, but it ain't
28 Negura Bunget
'N Crugu Bradului

Drive down a deserted country road in the winter, and let your mind wander.
29 Satanic Warmaster
Strength & Honour
30Dodheimsgard
Supervillain Outcast
31Abigor
Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom)
32Arsis
A Celebration of Guilt

The only good Arsis album.
33Sleep Terror
Probing Tranquillity

Very little emotion, just a guitar exercise that's incredibly fun to listen to.
34Slough Feg
Traveller
35Hammers of Misfortune
The Bastard
36Soilwork
The Chainheart Machine
37Meshuggah
Destroy Erase Improve

The one 'shuggah record that stands out from a brilliantly consistent discography (sans their debut, which sounded amateurish and uninspired).
38Emperor
Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire...
39Ihsahn
The Adversary
40Antony and the Johnsons
I Am a Bird Now

Sometimes sappy-sometimes happy baroque pop
41Sigh
Imaginary Sonicscape
42Wintersun
Wintersun

Seeing these guys in a few weeks m/
43Shining (SWE)
V - Halmstad
44Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat Major, Op. 73

I always prefer seeing this live than listening to it on CD, BUT there's no denying that this is the greatest of the Beethoven Piano Concertos, and is a beautifully written piece of late-classical/early romantic music
45 Dmitri Shostakovich
Symphony No. 5 in D-minor
46Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki
Symphony No. 3, Op. 36

Possibly my favourite symphony ever
47Johann Sebastian Bach
Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008
48Deathspell Omega
Paracletus

I still can't stop being intrigued by this. It's more sinister and evil than perhaps anything I've ever heard, and it isn't even always all-out aggression.
49Wolves in the Throne Room
Two Hunters
50Nachtmystium
Assassins: Black Meddle Pt.1

This really grew on me
51Dethklok
Dethalbum III
52Primordial
The Gathering Wilderness
53Abigail Williams
In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns

What I thought was a budding new symphonic black metal band with a promising future didn't really go anywhere after this.
54Lustre
A Glimpse of Glory
55NOFX
Heavy Petting Zoo

Yeah, yeah, it doesn't fit in at all, but in the summer before high school I listened to this every morning, afternoon, and evening. "Hot Dog in a Hallway" still gives me the biggest grin.
