|The Ever Changing Sputnik|
So, my third Sputnik anniversary is nearing and I'm starting to feel that aging that those notable old users always talked about. It mostly comes from that feeling of nostalgia as all those old users you used to know and accept as staples on the site turn 23 or something and move on with their actual lives. As for me, I joined when I was 12 and am now an antisocial 15, so I think I'll be here for a while longer, but I've already seen what seems like generations of Sputnikers moving on and the torch of some aspects of the userbase being passed on (Dave's modding went to Dev, Crandy's shitty reviews went to HillaryClitTongue, etc.). Below are a list of users off the top of my head that I'm seeing a lot on the site nowadays, and some I remember fondly. The albums displayed are the first albums that came to mind when thinking of each of their respective users. Feel free to add your own bros/thoughts/epitaphs down below!
|1|| ||Current hangers-about|
Fool on the Planet
YakNips - I've been seeing this guy daily for the past month and he seems pretty cool. Likes "FLCL" so we're buds.
Trebor17 - as you know, Trebor hit contrib recently and has been writing regularly, so I guess you could say he's moving up in the Sput-chain, but he's been here since around when I got on and he was always a significant part of the userbase, as well as one of the cooler dudes on the site. Good luck on getting promoted, Treb!
|4||Bomb the Music Industry!|
Kman418 - always a big punk fanatic, always has a tasty avatar, and is always cool. :)
Skele/DragonHeartstring - oh Skele, how I wish you will never change! If you guys didn't know, he's still doing his YouTube thing so hit up the account "Marik Ishtar" for some mad Anglo-Jamaican rhymes.
Merriweather Post Pavilion
Deviant. - remember that point when Dev was nowhere to be found for a while and we weren't getting those news blog posts every week? Anyway, glad to have you back, Dev, and glad to see you dropping witty lines on ignorant niggas.
|7||Pianos Become the Teeth|
The Lack Long After
XingKing - you'll find Xing on skramz threads all the time and he's one of those users with much stronger or more controversial opinions on albums, which is definitely one of the more admirable traits to have on this site. Check his solo skramz project, Warren of Ohms. http://warrenofohms.bandcamp.com/
|8||Saves the Day|
Stay What You Are
Cygnatti - a user who has a much clearer perspective on how he rates albums than the rest of us: a lot of his 3.5s are more like 4s or 4.5s for me, even though I think we'd feel similar about such albums, and when I think about it, his ratings are probably more fitting.
|9||The Wonder Years|
The Greatest Generation
joshieboy12345 - the Aussie pop punk kid with that goddamn Aussie meme for his avatar which I hate so fucking much.
Rev - Rev, who will always be TheReverend724 to me, is of course Sputnik's very own bansheebeat. He rocks as hard as he Reasons or animes, making for an all round awesome dude. Hell, I've checked out anime just from Google Image-searching his avatars, and I haven't been disappointed so far. http://bansheebeat.bandcamp.com/
IbenizGEO1 - seeing him around heaps. Pretty nice guy but his ratings have been the target of dispute.
Darkness, Oh Hell
John "Kisses Boys/Hipster/Legendary User" Hanson/Iluvatar - it's true that Hanson's not on this site as often as he used to be, but it's always pleasant when he drops by.
The Hands That Thieve
demigod93 - outside of metal, I feel we have similar music tastes. Great guy out on the threads, and he once did me a favour involving a certain ska record which I'm still grateful for to this day.
|14|| ||Peeps I miss or don't hang out with as much|
|15||Altar of Plagues|
Teethed Glory and Injury
Ipodmastery/Rob Garland - Rob joined after me and we became friends on a few threads back when he was starting up. I dropped off Sputnik for a few months a while ago and we haven't talked as much since because of our different music tastes, but I have him on Facebook. He's got a review site now (Melting Album Reviews).
Maniac! - speaking of review sites, Maniac's one is doing well. I forgot what it's called, but it's grown since he started it up way back. I miss his Pennywise avatar!
SowingSeason - Sowing just left, but even prior I didn't encounter him as much as I used to. I really feel the Sputnik-age with respect to Sowing especially because I remember his lengthy, lengthy stint as a Contributor and his victorious promotion to Staff FINALLY (for much of that time he had that skimpy avatar of that lingerie chick whose name I can't remember for the life of me). Salute to Sowing in his future away from this damned site.
|18||The Tallest Man on Earth|
The Wild Hunt
Douglas - Douglas is a user that I haven't encountered in a long time, but I remember nice chats about The Tallest Man on Earth and The Gaslight Anthem. Not sure if he's still around, but I'm pretty sure he's not.
Sonictheplumber - I think one of the infamous acts passed down by Deviant after his mod promotion was the 6 month banning of Sonic, who was undoubtedly one of the most prominent users of the site, but I haven't seen him around very much at all since that ban. He was hit-and-miss fun, but fun nonetheless.
Deathofasalesman - I think he's Australian, in which case I am saddened his departure. Aussie Sputbro numbers wane as the months go by...
|21||The Mountain Goats|
Aids - I was surprised when Aids mentioned he doesn't Sput as much anymore: I hadn't really noticed (especially since his promotion). Write some more reviews, man!
don't fucking know
Monica Skoko or whatever her name was - Chinchillin'...seriously, do you guys remember her? STAFF IN TWO REVIEWS!
Songs About Fucking
Porch - I know he's still around, but I wish he would get into more heated debates. He was always insightful if a little condescending, and a blast to talk to.
Empty Days and Sleepless Nights
Kris/UhhKris - ah...miss this guy.
|25||Mumford and Sons|
Sigh No More
Adam Knott - ByVolume's picking up a little (I miss the PDF format), and I wish him the best of luck with it!
redskyformiles - I miss this guy's input. I have him on Facebook but we never talk, and he recently got back to a marginal amount of rating, but I'd like to hear him reviewing again (he quit ByVolume), especially since he rated the new Brave Bird a 2. Oh yeah, Love American broke up and everything. http://loveamerican.bandcamp.com/
SeaAnemone - Famous for his insane list making skills, the legendary SeaEric left the site to fend for themselves in the realm of post-hardcore.
Enotron - had the best profile picture eva, also interesting to talk to.
|You have neat taste for a 15 year old, man.|
|Thanks, man. :)|
|are you seriously 15 wow |
|wow i'm 15 too|
|No-one in the world has this good a music taste at 15. You are clearly lying... |
|...clearly not the focus of this list, but I'm 15.|
|do you pinky promise |
|I was joking : ) - also none of the people on this list are awake/doing actual interesting things with their lives so clearly so it's all we have to talk about!|
|"none of the people on this list are awake/doing actual interesting things with their lives"|
lol yeah I don't know what's so appealing about Sputnik at work or late at night but I rock it at 2AM or during school all the time
|I've been here for a decent while and I was here even longer with my previous account.|
I'm really surprised by how many Australians use this site regularly.
Anyone know what the average age of a Sputnik user is?
|I check it when I should be doing actual things just to put them off. Probably the reason i don't have a job this summer.... Ah well worth it|
|@ Scream: I'm always pleasantly surprised when someone says they're Aussie. I even ran into DarthMann at a concert a few weeks ago. Also, the average age of a Sputniker is supposed to be "a lot lower than people would think" or something according to one of the mods.|
"I check it when I should be doing actual things just to put them off."
This site is ridiculously good procrastination material.
|Shit I should be hitting a few years soon.|
|"Cygnatti - a user who has a much clearer perspective on how he rates albums than the rest of us"|
lmao are you serious, he rates lots of shit albums that he hasn't even heard just to maintain a low average rating which is incredibly lame and he also said that he rates based on how often he listens to an album wtfff i mean i like the dude he's a chill guy but his ratings are lol
|I'm pretty sure I've attended a lot of shows in Melbourne where a few Aussie Sputnik users were also in attendance which is pretty cool. |
|cooler than me i mean i dont rate albums at all look at me goooo|
|If you aren't lying just to look elite and seriously like 4,7,13,19,24 & 27 at the age of 15, props to you man, awesome taste!|
|im a toddler |
|Well, it seems I missed all that Cyg shit. When I encountered him, he always had these Needle Drop way of scaling his ratings which actually seemed pretty fair.|
|this list missing alot of cool ppl tho |
|Cool list Laurabro|
|"If you aren't lying just to look elite and seriously like 4,7,13,19,24 & 27 at the age of 15, props to you man, awesome taste!"|
The albums displayed are the first albums I thought of when thinking about each of the users respectively (probs should have mentioned that). Having said that, I have heard all those albums and love them except Swift and Mumford.
|"speaking of review sites, Maniac's one is doing well. I forgot what it's called..."|
|yea the entire site's userbase has turned over since my early days pretty much but that's probably a good thing seeing as how most were shit anyways|
|Most are still shit. Just newer shit|
|Stop playing with your Uncle's balls, sister!|
