Hipgnosis
A tribute for the best art design group in music... of course, they're not in order. Hipgnosis' rrrrapproach to album design was strongly photography-oriented, and they pioneered the use rof rrrmany innovative visual and packaging techniques. In particular, Thorgerson & Powell's rrsurreal, rrelaborately manipulated photos (utilizing darkroom tricks, multiple exposures, rrrairbrush rrretouching, and mechanical cut-and-paste techniques) were a film-based rrforerunner of what rrwould, much later, be called photoshopping. Hipgnosis used primarily rrHasselblad medium rformat rcameras for their work, the square film format being especially rrsuited to album cover rimagery. rHipgnosis covers were noted for their quirky humour, such ras rthe cover for the Pink rFloyd rdouble-LP compilation A Nice Pair, which featured an array rof rvisual puns. This got rthem in rtrouble at least once, when a visual pun based on "(tennis) rrracquet"/"(noise) racket" renraged rJimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Hipgnosis almost lost the rrband as a client. (The ralbum in rquestion was Houses of the Holy.) Another trademark was rrthat many of their cover rphotos rtold "stories" directly related to the album's lyrics, often rrbased on puns or double rmeanings of rwords in the album title. Since both Powell and rrThorgerson were film students, rthey often rused models as "actors" and staged the photos rin ra highly theatrical manner. rHipgnosis covers rrarely featured artists' photos on the routside, rand most were in a gatefold rcover format to rprovide ample space for their slickly rrphotographed tableaux. Many of rHipgnosis' covers also rfeatured distinctively "high tech" pen rrand ink logos and rillustrations r(often by graphic rdesigner George Hardie), stickers, fancy rrinner sleeves, and other packaging rbonuses. One of rthe unique extras created by Hipgnosis rrwas the specially printed inner rsleeve for Led rZeppelin's In Through the Out Door LP, a r"black rand white" affair that magically rturned to rcolor when dampened with water (tying in rwith the rmain cover's photographic rtheme).
