05.15.13 | yeah it's kinda surprising tbh. i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lot of the kids in my class pretty much take their
parents word as law, and of course a lot of older generations are still stuck in that mindset (for example i told someone in my
class I'd probably try weed if given the chance since they were on the topic and they flipped shit and lectured me for 15
minutes on how it's terrible and evil and illegal and will kill me and ruin my life). it's still fun poking holes in all their shitty logic
whenever these topics are brought up though |

sure, why do married couples get tax deductions just for being married? the logic used to be that incentive to marry (i.e. unequal rights) was justifiable because married couples are more stable and just better for society. with divorce rates through the roof you wonder if this is still the case though.
(personally i just accept the fact that marriage gives you tax benefits. there are bigger things to worry about, but there is a legitimate argument here) |
Kman418
05.17.13 | yeah i totally get where hillary is coming from, i get his point, it's just that whether it's actually right to abolish marriage making that an actual reality would be so mind numbingly hard that there's not really much of a point. marriage will continue on for decades to come and they will continue to have the same flaws, sorry but it honestly is the truth. considering this, i still stand by the position that gay marriage should be legalized, cause considering that marriage will most likely always be part of our society i'd still like to partake in it. if ya can't fight them then join them, i guess
but that doesn't change the fact that you're still a cunt and this thread has successfully been ruined cause of that so good job |

05.17.13 | Ok now I know why everyone hates hilary |
toxin.
05.17.13 | "making that an actual reality would be so mind numbingly hard that there's not really much of a point"
that's fucking dumb, i could have said that about desegregation in the 40s or gay marriage in the whenever's. the real reason marriage won't be abolished (and the reason i don't really bother to argue it) is because marriage is so entrenched in our culture that it doesn't even occur to people that marriage can be bad. it's the status quo, and it doesn't seem oppressive because anyone (if gays can marry, that is) can attain this. as long as this illusion exists then it'll never change.
there are some marriage rights that should be retained (such as being able to make medical decisions if your SO is incapacitated for w/e reason) but these rights could just be a simple legal contract you sign when you get married (religiously) or just when you feel like it---it shouldn't be a status the gov't imposes on you.
i agree with your point that as long as marriage does exist there's no reason gays shouldn't be married.
(@lakes, seriously you make a list about gay marriage, what were you expecting? i'd argue that marriage is just an important part of gay marriage as the gay part) |
Cygnatti
05.17.13 | where is this video, lakes. |
Cygnatti
05.17.13 | it's ridiculous to say that gays shouldn't have the right to marry because marriage doesn't work. as someone else put it: "why don't they get the right to marry? I'm pretty sure they deserve the right to be just as un-fucking-happy as the rest of us!" |
Kman418
05.17.13 | toxin you're pretty much saying the same thing as me man lol. i agree that if they was some sort of movement to make marriage rights more fair then yeah we should go for it, but since like you said it's so engrained in our society the chances of enough awareness of this issue being brought up that any sort of change could happen in the near future that for now i think gay marriage should be legal. |
toxin.
05.17.13 | @cyg here's the thing though, if there is a discussion of the nuances of a system and an opinion holds that the system itself is broken, then there is a place in this discussion for that opinion.
if his opinion is "by whining about gay marriage you're missing the point that the actual system itself is broken; on the contrary you're only strengthening its existence within society*" is there anything wrong with that?
@lakes
"the role of marriage in society is another topic entirely."
is it really? i mean if straight couples had the right to kill their children up to age 17 and gay couples didn't, sure you can argue that gay couples don't have this right which straight couples have, but the other argument is that straight couples have rights that they shouldn't have in the first place, right? it's pertinent. (and obviously marriage isn't as bad as killing children, i was just making a point) |
toxin.
05.17.13 | @lakes sure i'm not disagreeing with what you say, like i said it'd be a pointless endeavor for me to convince people marriage as anything more than religious/spiritual/personal is stupid, i'm just arguing that marriage as a government institution absolutely is pertinent to the topic of hand.
obviously there's no reason to have mentioned it in your 5 minute speech, of course. |
Cygnatti
05.17.13 | But then why is marriage broken?
Are the problems new or have they really always existed, they're just more "accepted" and public options these days.
Perhaps more importantly, why does marriage deserve a tax break? Why is money ever involved in an institution supposedly based on love? |
tommygun
05.17.13 | lol love |
Cygnatti
05.17.13 | Funny thing is that many people would say that today but in Shakespeare's time, marriage based on love was blasphemous and woefully idealistic. |
Cygnatti
05.17.13 | Well for many decades, men used women for the house and shit, women would use men for the money. It all worked out so beautifully. |
toxin.
05.17.13 | "But then why is marriage broken?"
"why does marriage deserve a tax break?" |
toxin.
05.17.13 | and like i said it's obvious why there was tax benefits to marriage---marriage was positively correlated with a better society (like they were more stable so kids grew up better etc). question is whether this still holds true |
toxin.

05.17.13 | ^^^^^ if these people were smart they'd get married. if you think about it for more than 5 seconds you'd understand why |
toxin.
05.17.13 | "but wouldn't a tax reduction be a positive thing in that case if it contributes to a better life for the child?"
indeed but you're missing my point. perhaps it's just that "good parents" (by whosever standards) just happen to be the same kind of people who want to get married. i.e. stick these people in the same position sans a government-mandated marriage and the kid would have an equally good upbringing.
