How Do You Rate "timeless" Or "revolutionary" Albums?

I was wondering, how do you rate albums that were either: A. Groundbreaking B. Considered classic by the masses C. A legend in a particular genre Do you rate them with keeping that in mind, or just listen to it and compare it to modern day music in the same genre? I often have a hard time hearing what all the hype is about with some of these bands that are so critically acclaimed from 15+ years ago, simply because I was not around for their creation and have heard bands heavily influenced by their groundbreaking work.
