| Top 25 Musical Cities, According To Rateyourmusic.com
According to Rateyourmusic.com, these are the cities from which the music
I listen to comes from, ordered by number of bands/artists. There are a few
issues with the music-mapping system (as you will see), but overall, it's still
pretty interesting. | 25 | | Mesa Verde The Old Road
Glasgow, GB - 6 (also tied with 6: Stockholm, Oakland, Sacremento, Manhattan,
Queens, Amherst (Massachusetts) ) | 24 | | Stars of the Lid And Their Refinement Of The Decline
Austin, Texas - 7 | 23 | | The Thermals The Body, The Blood, The Machine
Portland, Oregon - 7 | 22 | | Polica Give You The Ghost
Minneapolis, Minnesota - 7 | 21 | | Hop Along Get Disowned
Baltimore, Maryland - 7 | 20 | | Delta Spirit History From Below
San Diego, California - 7 | 19 | | Parades Foreign Tapes
Sydney, Australia - 7 | 18 | | Jawbox For Your Own Special Sweetheart
Washington DC - 8 | 17 | | Dirty Three Toward The Low Sun
Melbourne, Australia - 8 | 16 | | Shugo Tokumaru In Focus?
Tokyo, Japan - 9 | 15 | | Vales Clarity
Cornwall, GB - 9, a few things wrong with this one. First of all, Cornwall is an entire
region of England containing places like Newquay, Truro, Penzance, etc. Secondly,
pretty sure the only Cornish band I've ever heard is Vales, and everyone else listed
here is either from Bristol (still Southwest, but not near Cornwall really), or
somewhere else completely. Seems to be an RYM glitch. | 14 | | The War on Drugs Slave Ambient
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - 10 | 13 | | Danny Brown XXX
Detroit, Michigan - 10 | 12 | | Deerhunter Halcyon Digest
Atlanta, Georgia - 11 (I would have picked Big Boi or Killer Mike for this one but
acording to RYM, Big Boi is from Savannah (even though Outkast is listed as
Atlanta, makes sense I guess) and Killer Mike is from some suburb). | 11 | | Oneohtrix Point Never Replica
Boston, Massachusetts - 13 | 10 | | Loma Prieta I.V.
San Francisco, California - 13 | 9 | | Kishi Bashi 151a
Seattle, Washington - 14 (we make some good hipster music up here in the
Northwest) | 8 | | Japandroids Celebration Rock
Vancouver, BC, Canada - 14 (hometown love, this number will only increase as I
continue to get into local bands) | 7 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Montreal, Quebec, Canada - 15 (surprisingly low, I figured I listened to enough
Canadian indie music that this would be one of the front-runners, maybe not!) | 6 | | El-P Cancer 4 Cure
Brooklyn, New York - 19 | 5 | | Cap'n Jazz Shmap'n Shmazz
Chicago, Illinois - 19 | 4 | | Basia Bulat Heart of My Own
Toronto, Ontario, Canada - 19 (very surprised Montreal lost out to Toronto for top
Canadian city) | 3 | | Yeah Yeah Yeahs Mosquito
New York, New York - 38, but this would have been number 1 if RYM organized it
better. There were catogories for all the boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Harlem
etc.) but also a one non-specific one for all of NYC. If this were organized properly,
NYC would be #1. | 2 | | Warpaint The Fool
Los Angeles, California - 46 (not including Compton, Glendale etc.) | 1 | | Burial Kindred
Still the centre of the rock music universe: City of London, GB - 48 (many more in
the Great London area, including Hammersmith, Brixton, Deptford, Wembley, etc.) | |

04.15.13 | so yeah pretty much just swap out Cornwall for Bristol in the 15 spot (Portishead, Massive Attack, The Pop Group, Bonobo, etc.)

04.15.13 | Surprised as well that Toronto beat out Montreal. But there are a ton of artists from both cities that
I love. I've also been to shows in both of these cities and I have to say that I prefer Toronto venues
(that's just me though). | Aids

04.15.13 | Has anybody been to any of these cities? I've been planning on moving to a country in Europe next year or backpacking.
My motivation is that Brisbane, Australia is a cultural abyss and I don't particularly identify with anybody I've met in this
middle/upper class conservative environment. I yearn to live in a place rich with culture and pursuers of music, art,
literature... rather than wasting away in America's cultural backwash, always two steps behind the rest of the world. | liledman
04.15.13 | Melbourne is much better. At the same time though, it's only good by Australian standards. I would be tempted to move to US/Canada if my band all agreed upon it. | zakalwe
04.15.13 | Australia one of the greatest countries I have had the pleasure to visit. Laid back, unpretentious as fuck, weather like the Trinity Test, Melbourne was the exact opposite though. | intotheshit
04.15.13 | I mean, we did give the world Pitbull! | anarchistfish
04.15.13 | Hopefully I'll be moving to Bristol later this year.

04.15.13 | too much u.s. not enough sweden, norway, and finland | DirtyDan
04.16.13 | No Gothenburg? list is invalid | Aids
04.16.13 | @ Puzzles - Move to Berlin or Dublin. If that's no good, hit me up cause I've backpacked Europe 3 times and lived in Ireland and England.
@ everyone else, yeah sorry I don't listen to much metal. Better get all retarded about it. | DominionMM1

04.22.13 | grew up in Chicago, definitely some great music around there.
i don't know about NOLA, they don't have much besides some brilliant metal and early R&B. A lot of the cities on the list have some really eclectic music scenes.
| illmitch
