Modern Works Of Literature

I was just wondering why we read so much in school? The whole point of reading is to gain insight of other people, acquire knowledge, and understand complex nuances. We dig deep to find symbolism, motifs, and to further understand motives of characters. Why are we limited to just novels in our schools? Does music not tell a story, have underlying symbolism, and also provide insight about the writer? Why do we not watch more movies, biographies, etc? Leave your thoughts down below
