12.07.12 | Can't really judge. My knowledge of paradiddles and rhythm is lacking and I'm not properly educated in the area of percussion to make such a claim. Both are great, but to my ears Danny Carey, But you should listen to Toe and be blown away sometime. |
DamnVanne
12.07.12 | It's almost meaningless to put one above the other, because both of them kick so much ass. I've been listening to both for several years now and I don't even view them as playing the same style. Portnoy has some killer dynamics in his own right, and Danny Carey makes ridiculous grooves feel like just another metal beat (in a good way). I can't put one over the other, because when listening to either one I think, "there is almost no one who could play this, and even fewer who could conceive it".

DamnVanne
12.07.12 | but the answer to your question is Phil Collins |
Chortles
12.07.12 | another wonderful poll!!!!!! |
elephantREVOLUTION
12.07.12 | i would pick carey but their styles are pretty different so it's hard to compare |
FearThyEvil
12.07.12 | carey by a mile |
MiniatureHorse
12.07.12 | Carey for sure. Ugh, Portnoy. He acted like such a dick in his drum battle with Billy Rymer. |
demigod!
12.07.12 | i haven't listened to much DT and am a bit biased towards Tool, so I'm gonna have to go with Carey. |
YoYoMancuso
12.07.12 | carey because portnoy overplays too much and cares more about flash and style than timing and precision |
tarkus
12.07.12 | carey cos cooler and better and still these lists are fucking stupid |
DamnVanne
12.07.12 | but he is REALLY fucking good at flash and style |
demigod!
12.07.12 | yeah Portnoy is definitely a great drummer, Carey's just better |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | Portnoy is awesome, but his singing sucks, so Carey it is |
DamnVanne
12.07.12 | Portnoy is beyond awful at singing and especially at growling. |
demigod!
12.07.12 | I didn't even know he sang on anything. |
ibringyoufire
12.07.12 | Carey is a goddamn champion. |
DamnVanne
12.07.12 | Listen to 'A Nightmare to Remember'. The part starting near 11:30 (after 3 minutes of guitar and keyboard solos) is Portnoy. Be prepared, it's bad bad bad.

FearThyEvil
12.07.12 | i cringed |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | But then again Portnoy has drummed on more LP's than Carey, meaning more drums, meaning quantity not quality. Portnoy wins |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | But then again, Portnoy smoked and jesus hates smokers. Carey wins |
Gwyn.
12.07.12 | Carey by a million light years. |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | But then again, Carey smiles a lot in interviews, meaning he could be gay. Portnoy wins |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | But then again, Portnoy is smaller than Carey meaning Carey would physically challenge him, Carey wins |
undertakerpt
12.07.12 | But then again watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LemwuSVj0Ak
Portnoy wins |
eleventhsun
12.07.12 | Carey wins by a long shot. He actually plays complex and interesting patterns. Portnoy is pretty much rolls and wank. |
DamnVanne
12.07.12 | The suck and gay tracks are completely off |
chambered49
12.07.12 | well dream theater is fucking awful soooooooooooo
carey |
NightmareCinema16
12.07.12 | I don't really care who's better. Honestly, it's more about the band itself, not any specific member. |
tempest--
12.07.12 | I used to think Portnoy was the best a few years ago but came to my senses and realised that he's not actually that super awesome fantastic so Carey. |
dawija1017
12.07.12 | danny carey....simply because he took a more creative and deeper approach to learning the drums than mike's traditional path. |
ZoidbergQuestion
12.07.12 | drew carey vs mike portnoy |
demigod!
12.07.12 | i hate when people compare Portnoy to Peart, such an insult |
NightmareCinema16
12.07.12 | lack of accomplishment, I say. |
Inferis
01.18.13 | Carey. Considering one of Portnoy's fans, Blake Richardson, is already miles ahead of him. No one can touch Danny Carey. |
Gwyn.
01.18.13 | Billy Rymer also beat the shit out of him(Portnoy) in a drum duel a few months ago |
dsroka005
07.05.13 | carey is more tasteful |
eleventhsun
07.06.13 | I enjoy all of your reasons for choosing Carey. |
DiegoPujolT
01.15.14 | Mike Portnoy. Carey is good and plays more complicated stuff, but Portnoy's my favorite. His style and easily recognizable sound make him a better artist. If you think Carey is a god (like MANY seem to think), go listen to Matt Halpern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, etc. |
DiegoPujolT
01.15.14 | And Dream Theater is better than Tool. Tool has cool stuff, and are visually and conceptually creative, but all they do is play the same riff in all of their songs, with Carey changing it a little bit with his changing patterns. |
undertakerpt
01.15.14 | Michael Snoxall, where did he go? |
