Squidplane
11.14.12 | Go for a used Epiphone G-400. The worn ones are about 300 new, the non-worn are about 400 new. The used ones could go for quite a bit less than that, they're nice guitars for a variety of genres. I have one of the silverburst ones |

Dolving999
11.14.12 | I've been playing since I was 10, and along the way I've learned a little something about different kinds of guitars. If you wanna play screamo ( I'm assuming by that you also mean a bit of post-hardcore and metalcore) look no further than an ESP.
Take a look at this one: http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/EUR/ESP-LTD-EC-100QM-STBC-See-Thru-Black-Cherry/art-GIT0007136-001
It's probably within your price range and it's a pretty good guitar for starters. You'll want a nice amp, I recommend one of those modelling amps, so you can experiment a bit with all the sounds. Peavey, Line 6 and Fender make those nowadays.
Cheers |

DotEight
11.14.12 | I love my new Ibanez RGA7 Prestige. Costs an arm and a leg, but so worth it. |
wacknizzle
11.14.12 | A standard Fender Telecaster is a relatively cheap and highly versatile guitar. Like ChuckyTruant said Ibanez RG are great and cheap guitars that are great for metal and technical stuff. Epiphone Les Paul's good too. |
DotEight
11.14.12 | All I play is metal, if it's something else I'll switch to my Taylor acoustic. Ibanez definitely is the best for metal or lower tunings. |
menawati
11.14.12 | ye Tele, versatility and most of your money is going on the things that matter like the quality of wood and the neck bcos its a basic guitar |
Blackbelt54
11.14.12 | I've been playing bass on and off for almost 4 years and I'm gonna buy my friend's old guitar in a few days... so yeah I can't help but hooray for expanding musical abilities |
DotEight
11.14.12 | If you've got the fundamentals of bass down, guitar will be a fairly easy switch. Other than learning chords and alternate picking, which still isn't complicated. |
DrMaximus
11.14.12 | I play guitar and slappa da bass! |
wacknizzle
11.14.12 | @DotEight: Yeah dude I totally agree. I started playing bass at twelve and mastered it in 2 1/2 years playin all dem Red Hot Chili Peppers songs and taking lessons. Then I moved to guitar and it made it is easy because my rhythmic fundamentals were already up to speed. |
DotEight
11.14.12 | Yeah bass and guitar have always seemed to have the same fundamentals as far as music theory go. It's still picking, learning your timing, etc. It's just with guitar it's 2-3 more strings to deal with. |
KangarooSong
11.14.12 | Ok well if you want quality and not just a brand name on the headstock to show off with (which is obviously hard to do with limited money), you might be good with a Samick. I've owned a Samick RL-1 for about 7 years now, and the thing plays really fucking great for the $279 I paid.
Everyone comments on how nice it looks and sounds. Samick is a great maker of guitars; if you don't care about a famous name on your instrument, you couldn't go wrong. It kicks the shit out of Squier, but then again, most guitars do.
Also, Ibanez. |
wacknizzle
11.14.12 | Agreed but I think the way you play them and what you're going for with both are entirely different, but that's also from a writing prospective. |
JAV
11.14.12 | You may be able to find some good deals at pawn shops but make sure you bring someone who knows how to make sure the guitar isn't fubar.
Got my Les Paul and Ibanez s540 at one, both are great.

11.14.12 | get a really shitty guitar and practice till it sounds good |
DotEight
11.14.12 | "get a really shitty guitar and practice till it sounds good"
Hate to say it, but [2]. It all depends on what you want to learn. |
Strider
11.14.12 | Those Ibanez starter guitars aren't really expensive and have a correct sound if you're starting out. I'd get a good amp though, cause if you're really counting on playing, there's no need to have to buy better amps each time |
tombits
11.14.12 | if i were you i'd go with a japanese fender tele or a lawsuit era copy; great, versatile guitars that you won't grow out of and can be further modified into incredible instruments. |

11.14.12 | Samicks are big in Asia and have a good sound to them. If you can find one for cheap, I say go with it.
Whatever you go for, you ought to go to a music store and test some shit out first. Big places like Sam Ash and Guitar Center will have a variety - mom and pop shops are all sort of pick and choose (I have one near by that has a bunch of Squiers and knock-off shitars, one that has B.C. Riches, Gibsons, Ibanez, Fenders, and a shitty sales staff, and another that has a chill crew and a primary stock of ESP/LTD).
I got a $99 Ibanez with a basswood body and hums when I started and I still play it today, about 10 years later. It plays pretty well, especially with elixers on it. It could have a better tone, but I only started realizing that a few years back. Also, it seems like with the most recent re-stringing that it's coming out of tune all the time. But these are issues I've only encountered after years of use and are things you probably won't even have to deal with. |
tombits
11.14.12 | "Wow, thanks for steering the kid in the complete opposite direction."
it took me a long time to realise it's worthless buying shit gear and regretting it 6 months later. constantly upgrading your
equipment is a cock up the ass so if this guy is committed to learning guitar then i see no problem in buying a quality
instrument right from the beginning. 'play a shitty guitar until it sounds good' is a great mantra but in reality a shit plank
is financially wasteful, costly to maintain and ultimately a discouragement to anyone playing it. |

11.15.12 | I've technically been playing guitar since I was 10, sucked till I was 15. Still not the meanest shredder but I've been able to write music I'm proud of and that's what matters to me most musically, if a riff is hard I'll work myself till I can play it. Still haven't got the monolithic metal album completely written and recorded yet but hopefully some day soon. |
