11.13.12 | What is that picture? | AngusACrowe
11.13.12 | My Mother. | eternium
11.13.12 | Darkspace. | Coast
11.13.12 | Coldworld - Melancholie
Liveride - Through Siberia
Darkspace - Dark Space III
Paysage d'Hiver - s/t
Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters | Hyperion1001
11.13.12 | cradel ov fvlth | AngusACrowe
11.13.12 | Cheers eternium & Coast (And Hyperion too I guess....) | Ignimbrite
11.13.12 | Paysage d'Hiver/Lunar Aurora - Split (not Paysage's best work, but the Lunar Aurora track is literally one of the best black metal tracks ever made #hyperbole)
Paysage d'Hiver - Winterkaelte (my all-time favorite black metal album. atrocious production, repetitive structures, and it sounds exactly like what the season of winter would sound like if it were made into a metal album)
Darkspace - Dark Space III (fucking *dark,* spacey, heavy-as-hell black metal)
Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters (the quintessential newbie atmospheric black metal album. the closing track is still one of my favorites)
And now for bands that have not been rec'd already (but you should seriously listen to all of those)...
Altar of Plagues - Mammal (don't listen to certain people on this website: this is an awesome album. *very* murky, dark, and sludgy black metal)
Ash Borer - Cold of Ages (one of the best currently active USBM bands. dark, intricate, doomy, bleak, desolate, and loaded with fantastic riffs and harrowing vocals)
Drudkh - Estrangement (if you want to get into atmospheric black metal, you are required to listen to at least one Drudkh album. this is my favorite of the ones I've heard, but I know others would disagree so I'd advise you to do your own research on this band's extensive catalog)
Irrwisch - Irrwisch (folky, atmospheric, and a but less produced than others here. the riffs are strong with this one)
Falls of Rauros - The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood (pretty straightforward folky atmospheric black metal. very well-executed and ideal for newbies)
The Great Old Ones - Al Azif (atmospheric black metal with a lot of post-metal influence. the lyrics are about Cthulhu, so yeah. you need it)
Panopticon - Collapse (folk/bluegrass + black metal = awesome)
Toluca - Act I (highly, highly recommended, especially because it's 25 minutes long and not that much of a time commitment, unlike some other albums I've listed...)
Twilight - Monument to Time End (supergroup with members of Leviathan, The Atlas Moth, Isis, Krieg, and others - industrial, sludgy atmospheric black metal)
Weakling - Dead as Dreams (a classic of USBM: influenced pretty much every other band in the scene)
Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason (very pretty, very melancholic depressive/atmospheric black metal) | Ignimbrite
11.13.12 | holy shit tl;dr... I did not mean to write that much | Blackbelt54
11.13.12 | idk if this counts, but:
Dopamine- Dying Away in the Deep Fall | AngusACrowe
11.13.12 | Awesome thanks for that dude. | Skrapyard
11.13.12 | Ignore all previous recommendations and instead consult the following list, in order:
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (more raw than others on this list, but the origin of all atmospheric BM... so listen to it)
Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Weakling - Dead as Dreams
Fell Voices - Untitled (II)
Ash Borer - Ash Borer
Paysage d'Hiver - Winterkaelte
Other contemporary bands with atmosphere (but not always ambiance):
Torture Chain - Time is But a Doorway to the Incinerator
Arizmenda - Within the Vacuum of Infinity...
Rhinocervs - RH-11 | AngusACrowe
11.13.12 | Why should I ignore when you are repeating a bunch of them. Dick. | Keyblade
11.13.12 | Darkspace - Darkspace III
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Nae'blis - Sketches of Reality
Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
Deep Mountains - Deep Mountains
Fell Voices - Untitled
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Melancolia - The Dark Reflection of Your Soul | Skrapyard
11.13.12 | "Why should I ignore when you are repeating a bunch of them. Dick."
Obviously you are still recommended those repeated albums when ignoring other lists BECAUSE I AM REPEATING THEM... Which I am doing because they are actually worth hearing. This 'sub-genre' or whatever you want to call it has, and will continue to be, saturated with shitty and/or mediocre Weakling or WitTR wannabes, most of which you don't need to hear.
Call me a dick, but I know what I'm talking about, and evidently you don't, or you wouldn't have made this list. Now piss off -- I give you a concise list of absolute essentials and you turn into a hypersensitive with a terrible grasp of punctuation. | Ignimbrite
11.13.12 | Chill, dude. | AngusACrowe
11.13.12 | I just don't get why you write off everyone else when they have gone through the effort of posting where opinions. Especially when your list is mainly the same. But whateves bra, do you even lift? | Keyblade
11.13.12 | skrapyard acting like his recs were out of dis werld | DeafMetal
11.13.12 | "But whateves bra, do you even lift?"
i lift gats | YankeeDudel
11.13.12 | skrap acting like he knows anything music oh boy I LAUGH | Tb1114
