| Artists And Their Face On Sound...
Hi everyone. =) Another question list. This time I wanted to ask
everyone what they think in regards to an artist and how he/she/they
reflect their music on you or does it bother you at all? For instance, do
you care about image, personality, things they've done or things they
haven't done? And does it make you think twice about their music or
enhance the experience for you just that little bit more? | | 1 |  | Sam Amidon
All is Well
Don't get me wrong, I loved his music before seeing him live. I held both of his
albums in a high regard and had given them the ratings I currently have for them
before seeing his shows... but then I went to one of his shows and my respect for
him sky rocketed. Easily the most humble and genuine musician I've seen perform.
Of course this probably comes from his lack of fame but every fabric in his body
screamed that he loved being there and doing what he was doing and that the
applause from fans was a cream and cherry reward on top of everything. | | 2 |  | Iron & Wine
The Creek Drank the Cradle
I hold his albums in a high regard personally but I've read countless times online
that he can be quite distant and unfriendly when dealing with his fans. I'm not sure
how far this goes because I haven't seen him live myself but it definitely has me
nervous for seeing him live when I get the chance to. Has anyone seen Sam Beam

Appetite For Destruction
This is a rather obvious one, isn't it? But it goes to the extent where I can't enjoy
Guns N' Roses any more. His level of professionalism is so dreadful; it annoys me
when I listen to something he has worked on. I know I shouldn't paint the artist too
personally with their music but when recent live shows have been so disastrous; it's
hard to appreciate Axl Rose's work when he treats his job and his fans with such

The Moon & Antarctica
Again, I really like their music but perhaps I was unlucky when seeing them at
Reading fest (I think it was 2010) and they performed with such little charisma and
care. Walked on stage, spoke one sentence half way through "It's f'ing hot",
finished and walked off stage. I had a chat with another Modest Mouse fan who
described their live shows as 'hit and miss'. I wish they were always hit. =/ | | 5 |  | Wild Beasts
Two Dancers
I've seen these guys live twice. There's nothing quite like a man raising a beer to
you and saying "Cheers, thanks a lot! We really appreciate you guys coming!". It's
subtle but I like it. =) They're humble, relaxed and they perform wonderfully on
stage. So, when I go home to listen to one of their albums; all I can see is a man
holding a beer and saying "Cheers, cheers! Thanks for picking us to listen to."...
probably not that vivid though. | |

Performance? Yes.
I saw Iron and Wine on The Sheperd's Dog tour and it a great concert. Sam's vocals are amazing live. I also saw him in the crowd at a Broken Social Scene concert - I nodded, he nodded back. Seemed chill. | Steoandnoodles

09.27.12 | I think its part of the package. The music always comes first but a cool image can make a band stand out. The album covers, music videos if they have them, and their personalities are interesting to me. | Steoandnoodles
09.27.12 | @Johnny: I doubt we're due a new Iron & Wine for a while now. Kiss Each Other Clean just came out last year.
@Yankee: Yeah, totally. I mean, it's important to have an image and a nice album art but would those things bother you if they were bad but the music was good? | AStableReference
09.27.12 | Often an artists personality shows through their music, so if there is a main mastermind behind the act it will reflect certain things about them.
When I find out a person is a terrible person I can usually start to pick up hints in the music and it does lessen the enjoyment for me. Maybe it's just in my head, but I can't usually think of it the same.
The same can be said about artists that I really agree with and that seem to be cool people. I guess I put too much care in to intent and the feeling that goes in to music.
How they look doesn't really matter, but it can enhance things a little bit if they look really cool. | Steoandnoodles

09.27.12 | Of course they wouldnt bother me. Its all about the music. They're just nice bonuses. I mean just think about the hoopla around Mayhem. Their music is good but all the shit that happened around that band def adds to their mystique. Tool is another band that has benefitted from a cool image, made by Adam Jones. Peter Gabriel used to dress up in crazy ass outfits on stage with Genesis to get the band more attention. People talked more about The Beatles' hair than their music when they first came over. Its all just cool little things that we remember. A smart band knows their image is important to how people perceive them. | Steoandnoodles

I guess something for me is that I like a band almost void of image. They just wear their casual clothes. It's not interesting by any means but it tells the listener that they want to be heard for their music and not idolised for their being. | menawati

09.27.12 | Yea but steo the bands that just "wear their casual clothes" are creating an image as much as anybody. An image that we're just regular laidback guys. Every band has an image. Its impossible not to. | ffs

I prefer music that is a form of personal expression, and in some way I believe the music or art you make will still reflect something about you. If it doesn't then I'm not really interested. Most artists I really like I end up liking as people, coincidentally. | Steoandnoodles

But I like that. You know? It's like saying that they know they're not going to make a big deal about being who they are and I appreciate that. |
