Artist: Senses Fail

Dave Miller - Guitar
Garret Zablocki - Guitar

Released: 2003 (Self Released then Picked up by Drive-Thru and re-released)

Senses Fail are one of the many bands Drive-Thru records has picked up in an effort to break the label of 'Crappy Pop-Punk' label and by now that label should have really disapered. They've signed acts such as RX Bandits, Early November and Senses Fail are just amongst the many talented acts. Senses Fail originate from New Jersey and some may be quick to point comparasions with other New Jersey bands such as Thursday and Saves The Day but Senses Fail are truely unique. This EP was originally self recorded and produced by the band. It landed on the desk of Drive-Thru records and Drive-Thru soon signed the band and re-mastered and added a bonus track to the EP and then re-released the EP. EPs are generally known for crappy production but this EP is a step above the bar of others.

The EP kicks off with 'Stephen'. It's not the best track but gives you some idea of what you will expect with the EP. From the lyrics it seems like a tribute to a dead friend 'November 10th, a cold dark night. You could feel that something wasn't right. That night many hearts did cry. When we learned we had to say goodbye.' The lyrics throughout this EP are outstanding and Stephen is a good example. The vocals of the song might be a bit hard to get into but it's a song which if you keep listning to it will grow on you. The next track 'Free Fall From a Parachute' opens with a cool guitar riff then everything kicks in. It's a fast paced song and a bit of a harder song. The lyrics are macarbe on this song but yet very well written. The chorus of this song is great and is very catchy 'With every passing moment, it just keeps getting worse. The walls are getting smaller and I am six feet beneath the earth'. Buddy sings. He also gives a very good vocal preformance and makes this song a very strong track. 'Bloody Romance' is a pretty song. It has a slow building intro and then it all kicks in. The band certanely get points for musicianship on this album and this song is no exception. There's another catchy chorus in this song and it's the most memorable yet. A stand out song. The guitar intro riff from 'Dreaming A Reality' is probably one of my favourite ever. It's not super difficult it just sounds great and with the other guitars and drums building up it has an awesome intro in general this song. It does take a little while to kick in but if you appreciate musicianship that should be no problem. Vocal preformance is great and lyrics are well written though a little weaker than the previous songs. The chorus glues this song together and makes it stand out. Something pretty consistent in this album are the cool intros and the next song 'The Ground Folds' probably takes the cake for the best intro. A small melodic guitar riff keeps going with distorded guitars and drums coming in for a few seconds at a time then bang into a verse. The vocals are at their best on this song and it's probably the most melodic song in terms of vocals. It's a love song but a dark love song. (This is after all an album with a very dark sound). 'One Eight Seven' could fool you at the begining for sounding for something of a New Found Glory album with a pretty guitar riff and nice vocals but this song has very little in common with NFG and is in my opinion the best on the album. The lyrics are great and Buddy puts up a brilliant vocal preformance. After the intro and verse (They go for a while) the distortion kicks in. The chorus is the most memorable part of the song and it's a beautiful chorus. I don't usually rate songs but this is a 10/10 for me. The last full band song is called 'Handguns and Second Chances'. A song which takes you in right from the start. The vocals are well done and lyrics still well written. It's not so catchy compared to some of the EPs other songs but by no means is it a let down. Finally the EP ends off. An acoustic version of 'The Ground Folds' does it. It's a great way to wind down after seven songs of dark emotional rock. It's incredibly pretty this song. Buddy sings very well and the guitars sound just right. A fitting end to probably the best EP i've ever listened to.

Though it's easy to label this band another Thursday or Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail have their unique sound and are not going anywhere. This EP is great. The vocals and lyrics are some of the best that i've come across in a long time. Yes the album is dark and does have lyrical similarites to the former mentioned bands but Buddys vocals are unique and end the similarties of the band. Senses Fail are due to release their debut album on Drive-Thru this year and like Finch the album will probably be the labels stand out release for the year and I can't wait to hear what they sound like with better production and a full studio at their use. Considering this EP has 8 tracks it's more than worth going down to your local store and buying for $10. A great release by a group destined to be a great band.

To say that anyones lyrics are weak is the biggest crock of **** you could say. To take someone elses thoughts and crush them is ****ing bull****. If you like and respect the band then do that. Don't bash the lyrics, if you think you can do better post them here and let people judge you. See how you like it.

As for Senses Fail - I think they are one of the greatest Indie Rock bands there is. If you guys like them check out Further Seems Forever, Dismissed, and Forgotten Arrival. All good ****.... peace.

You're being ignorant. You don't have to write better songs than someone to judge their lyrics; that's like saying I have to make a movie better than Gigli before I can judge it. Nonsense. I personally haven't heard that much Senses Fail, but the guy is allowed to voice his opinions on the lyrics, so shut up.

First of all, who the **** are you? Second, If you are not the lead singer in a band you have no right to judge anyones lyrics. Because you aren't the one putting yourself out there. And if you do believe that senses fail's singer can not write lyrics then you must be a ****ing moron and know nothing about poetry. I personaly do not judge lyrics cause it is not my place. If it does not relate to me or a situation I am in I just listen to the music because I love it.
So, with all that said I will allow you to be the first person to lick my s@ck

Are you kidding me? Not your place to judge lyrics? If you don't judge music then how do you even know whether you like music or not? Do you just like what other people tell you to like or something? My god, a LOT of people look for lyrics in songs, that's what determines whether the LIKE it or not. I know that may be a foriegn concept to someone who is so utterly dependant on other people's opinions that he can barely for ma coherent thought, but there ya go.

Ok and here's a sample from a senses fail song on this EP...

"I had a dream last night and in my dream I robbed a country club.
A 5 year old tried to stop me, but I shot him through the head, and now he's dead. "

And keep in mind they sing this without the slightest hint of irony, they're freakin serious about this crap. I'm not saying it isn't poetry, because it is, just crappy poetry.

You did a phenomenal job of reading my last post. Notice how my point was that you don't have to do something better than another person to judge what they do. For instance, I can judge President Bush, even though I myself am not the President. Understand?

Plus, you said you don't judge lyrics, but I'm a moron if I don't like his lyrics. Way to be a hypocrite!

i heard bloody romance on vans warped tour cd and i went out and there cd the same day. There is something to like about every song on the album. 187 turns from happy singalong song about a girl to rage, hatred and screaming about it. its just great. handguns and second chances is a very catchy song and its awesome. I also like dreaming a reality, the backround vocals and buddys vocal sound really good together, and the verse is really in your face, which is totally senses fail like. Like in the end or bloody romace. Its just crazy with all the vocals together its for a great song. senses fail is one of my favorite bands.

with the lyrics discussion, i'm not gonna knock them cause i'm in a band and i know how hard it is to put your thoughts down on paper and send them out there, it just not stuff that you want your little sister to hear (i shot a five year old in the head, now he's dead...i slit your throat from ear to ear) but the EP is good, i love free fall, bloody romance is cool and an obvious choice for single, 187 is cool musically witht he clean guitars and then distorted, handguns is cathy as hell, the ground folds is awesome and the acoustic version is prety cool too, dreaming a reality is neat, but the only song i didn't really like was sTeven. but watch for their upcoming album Let It Enfold You...it's amazing, i was sent an early edition and it rocks, the first single is good but not hardcore really at all, the song is called Buried A Lie and you can listen tpo it on there website

Yeah Buried A Lie is a fantastic song. Lyrically it's great again. A detective mystery in a song. I can't wait for the new album.

i love the lyrics because they are real and from the heart. there are no contrived metaphors or complex situations, it is more of a "i will kill you for being a bitch" fest and i like it
Meh, let's think of ways we can kill our girlfriends, put them into lyrics and record them. Oh wait, Senses Fail already did!

The lyrics are the poorest part of the EP, which kinda ruins it as the music is excellent. The Ground Folds (acoustic) is really moving.

Music: 4/5
Lyrics: 2/5
Total: 3/5
2 of 7 songs (187 and Free Fall) refer to killing a girlfriend. Take an actual listen to the CD before making such generalised statements.
November 10th, a cold dark night. You could feel that something wasn't right. That night many hearts did cry. When we learned we had to say goodbye. All embraced under one common song. The body is dead, but life lives on.
And that's a terrible verse right there

i actualy like Buddy's lyrics, "Well I had a dream last night and in my dream I took a knife to you. I slit your throat from ear to ear The wound was gasping for the air your scream so clear". "So slice, open my veins, and let, the romance bleed away" i thought they did a pretty good job on lyrics
I actually have this CD, and have read the lyrics. I just can't like most of them (There are a few I don't mind, like The Ground Folds and Martini Kiss)
There's no Martini Kiss on this E.P
