Review Summary: Neuabuten Mark 1 collapses in style

Latin for clean slate, its an apt title it would be the last album with Mark Chung and Muffi. The album opens with Die Interimsliebenden, with a funky bass by Alexander Hacke. Immediately you are struck by the lack of metallic noise and how melody is beginning to move to the fore.

Zebulon is spare and gentle melody and vocal harmonies devoid of any percussion until it explodes in the last minute or so. Still the release is lacks the abrasion of previous works.
Fans may at this point begin to feel that neubauten have softened and they may be right but then they are missing the point.

Neubauten have began to expand their sound, use noise more sparingly and effective. Blume is a haunting melody, lead by female vocals with Bargelds whispers under pinning it, at times dreamy and other times filled with sadness.

12305 (Te Nacht) is electronic beeps and metal scrapings and droning, not the strongest track but by no means filler.

Sie sees the band swap metal pipes for plastic tubing, a technique that they will reuse throughout later albums, at least until the end of the track where it comes in sparingly. While not as harsh as their more metallic songs, it still has the same intensity.

Wuste is a stand out track, using strings for the first time in a Neubauten album, as well as sand and burning oil. It starts off largely instrumental sounding like a Philip Glass composition, before
Blixa's whispered vocals creep in, at times they are barely audible over weird sounds and strings. Then the song abruptly ends.

Headcleaner builds from a low to hum over 1.03 mins punctuated by metallic percussion then dies down only start up again, and does this over its 15 mins.
Every time explodes the band throw themselves full long into sound smashing metal against metal recalling the glorious collapse of their debut kollapse.

Hearing it now the tension of the track it sounds like percussionist Muffi trying to drown out Bargeld and the rest of the band, it becomes easy to use the song as a metaphor for the inner tensions of the band and how they would never record another song as chaotic or tense as this track.

These guys are cool... they're one of the original industrial bands, back when they used to actually use various objects to create the sounds for the album, such as various metals clanging together and things of that nature.
This review doesn't give any background on the band or their methods, and doesn't even really describe the songs... it's a bummer too, cause it's not a bad album.

heh its my first review here... ok points noted,

I did make an attempt to describe the sound of the songs

eg: "Zebulon is spare and gentle melody and vocal harmonies devoid of any percussion until it explodes in the last minute or so. Still the release is lacks the abrasion of previous works."

I don't want to send 3 paragraphs describing every second on the song.

Shattered_Future: They change sound with every album, people make lazy comparisons to NIN or Rammestien.

They are industrial, using metal, air compressors, power tools for percussion instead of drums, they have guitar and bass

but use chords for texture so no solos and sonic youth distortion.

Jacktiger7x: Whats the album about?

As in themes, etc... I don't speak German...

ok googled lyrics english translation

"in their communal mouth

lives a hummingbird

with each humming beat of its wings

too swift for the eye to see

cultures flourish and perish

whole continents vanish

here are no harmless words

all by far too large

an example most simple explodes

in 10^14 for

the interimlovers"

Recording methods,

The band record songs from what you might call jam sessions,

THey have two percussionists, but band members often change instruments or even create or build instruments from found objects.

Certain song credits contain instruments as diverse as air turbines and motor engines.

Imagine the junk yard sound of Tom Waits meets Nick Cave's blues and Cabaret married with Depeche Modes darkest moments.....

If that is not clear enough then http://www.neubauten.org/

They still do. They're just using a lot more conventional instruments on top of it now.
I think what sets EN apart from a lot of other industrial bands is that they're great songwriters. Even their early, noisy stuff is cleverly arranged, without sounding too "planned out". In short, great band.
As for the review, it wasn't that great, mainly for the reasons other people mentioned already. When you're writing about not-extremely-popular bands, it's important that you give some background info as well as some general description of their sound.

I don't agree with that 'backgrond info for non-popular bands'.
If you want background info go search the band's home page or google/wikipedia for that info. I don't want to read the same thing over again.

Also, popular at 1 place is often not to extrapolate. Rush ex. is not known by most mainland-European people, despite their massive success in Northern-America. Does that mean you have to describe the band/background for all their 14 golden discs ? no

wtf?
however, I still need to get this album, but I do really like the band (I've recently got "Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T.", very, very frightening). one of my favourite german bands right now, and quite possibly my favourite outside of the Krautrock movement. and they're one of the few german bands that doe enjoy some fame outside of Germany, whose lyrics are actually good. (unlike the amazingly shitty ones by Rammstein or, more recently, the ludicrous stuff Equilibrium believes to be mystical.

Kind of quietly one of their best records. God I would die for Blixa
