Blue Oyster Cult

So, I've noticed lately that BOC are incredibly underrated. A lot of bands, particularly metal bands, cite them as a huge influence yet they tend to be treated as 1 or 2 hit wonders on classic rock stations (Fear the Reaper & Burning For You). This kind of reminds me of Deep Purple's treatment by popular media, as they're generally considered "that band that wrote Smoke On The Water" despite being hugely influential.

So are there any big BOC fans on here? If so, what albums would you recommend? It seems Agents of Fortune is the most obvious place to start, but what else would you recommend?

I'm kind of a fan! I got a greatest hits CD in high school, and I liked almost all the songs on there....Cities on Flame, Astronomy, Flaming Telepaths, Black Blade, In Thee, etc. I have a couple of their 'legit' albums and they're alright. A bit too corporate at times though.

good thing you brought this up, both BOC and Deep Purple are exactly bands I've been considered 'one hit wonders', but again, so many cite them as influences. Would anyone care to recommend 3-4 songs of each that maybe could get me into them?

lol. Learn how to play a power chord and then mess around for 5 minutes...

Agents of Fortune was very disappointing. I was hoping that it was going to be more psychedelic meets hard rock like Don't Fear the Reaper, but the rest of the album is mostly Steppenwolf style blues-rock which I'm not a huge fan of. Secret Treaties is AWESOME, though and I would highly recommend it...this is exactly what I was hoping BOC would sound like. Astronomy is a classic but so far the whole album is ace.

Yeah I own Secret Treaties on CD, and my dad's got Agents of Fortune and one other one on LP. I want to pick up their debut album because there's a few good tunes on there.

What's really funny is that their lead singer wasn't the main singer on their biggest hits, those were sung by the lead guitarist, Buck Dharma.

I would hardly call Purple a one hit wonder....maybe in retrospect, but they were the biggest touring band in the mid 70's as far as ticket sales go (outdoing the Stones and Zeppelin).

3 recommendations for both bands? BOC I'd recommend Astronomy, Flaming Telepaths, Last Days of May. Purple I'd recommend Child in Time, Burn, and Fools.

Aaah that explains it...kind of a shame, b/c Dharma has a great voice.

Nice recs Froggy...Last Days of May is epic.

Yeah, that's one band I never really got into for some reason. I got Agents of Fortune a long time ago, didn't listen to it much. I should check out more of their stuff.

I love BOC's first album. It's got some great tunes on it, real stoner music and some cool lyrics.

If you want something a bit different as well try Extraterrestrial Live. Not usually a fan of live albums but this one is a belter.

Its a band I should listen to more. I am a big Deep Purple fan and the same is true for me. "Didn't they write Smoke on the Water?" then I listen to Machinehead and Find out it a gret album head to toe and I have found great tunes on a few others.

BOC also falls into the same underappreciated catergory as King Crimson, and Ive been jamming them lately. Bands like these can't be forced on the ear I think, but if you appreciate Rock from this time thats not Led Zep or the Rolling Bones you'll get into it.

Fools is my favorite on Fireball, but damn is that drum intro on the title track one of the most killer ever!
