So I got caught up with other stuff and completly forgot about...

The brewing competition I entered. I couldn't make the awards ceremony cause we were transporting our animals back from getting them out of the house for our Open House. Super psyched for the results. I sent an e-mail to the organizer just trying to get some feed back and if I won any prize.

Zucco's won a lot of awards. I checked previous year results and his name popped up a lot. Upset I didn't get to go. Would have loved to chat with some of those guys.

I'll get a ribbon in the mail. They only gave prizes to people who were there, which was probably drinks. Wah wah.

Can't believe no club has picked you up... a free agent of your caliber could really swing the race for some of these teams trying to get in the game with Westchester...

Score cards are in. Got a 34, 35 and 37 out of 50. Apparently I lost points for not filling out a part of the form, but the form they had on the website didnt have that section to fill out. Maybe if I attended I could have gotten to it. So I could have won by a wider margain.

E-mailed two of the judges. Gonna see if I can't get some tips on what to tweak in the future. Think my next mead will be with black currant.

She chose to take it, I didn't make her.

Got feedback from the judge.
Quote:
I remember your entry better now. It was a very well balanced melomel and honestly, 37/50 is a really good score. I probably should have gone into the 38+ range since I really didn’t have anything critical to say. Or provide any suggestions for improvement.

Cherry is hard to pull off without making a mead that tastes like cough syrup. You avoided that. What could you have done to improve the mead? Well, you took first place in category – that says a lot in and of itself.

Maybe a more expressive honey? But I don’t think that would necessarily add anything except expense. Age? It’s drinking really nicely now and age may “dull” rather than improve the flavor.

Yours was the first mead in the flight that we had that didn’t reek of “hot”, high alcohol. We had been on a trend of low scoring meads and I suspect that your score reflects a bit of timidity after a run of unpleasant meads. I think that the lack of information regarding sweetness and strength allowed us to question the “intent” and question what we were scoring.

I also think that there is a touch of subjectivity involved. Cherry inherently comes off as candy like and syrupy. Even in a well-balanced and drinkable mead like yours. Had we been told that it was “sweet” and “sack” (even if the strength is really “standard” by the numbers), it would have given us the opportunity to go bigger in our scoring.

One of the other problems when it comes to scoring is sometimes a lack of time to write down more “abstract” ideas (like room for improvement or tasting connotations). We had a relatively big flight with a string of not so good meads preceding yours. And I think those are both factors that play into the scoring.

I hope my response helps. Maybe I’ve really just pointed out some of the flaws in the judging system. Thanks for entering a very enjoyable mead. It would be interesting to see how it does entered in another competition.

Cheers,
Really seems like not filling out the form hurt me more than anything cause the judges were going in blind with what to expect...

i was referred to as a "gym warrior"

you would think this would be a positive moniker, but you'd be wrong, apparently

mind you these were from ugly chicks that didn't want to get their disgusting hair more disgusting.

if that's at all possible

sounds like either the judge doesn't really know wtf he is talking about and is avoiding the question, or he has no criticisms and you did really good

probably the latter

Well he was the only judge that marked himself as a National BJCP judge. One other checked off certified and the third didn't put anything,

how many points did you lose because of the form?

or do you mean not a fixed deduction they had and just lack of context for the judges

Not sure to be honest. I think it had to do with the lack of context for the judges so they had to mark it down some.

So like I would have chosen from Dry, Semi-Sweet or Sweet. If I picked semi-sweet they'd go in judging based on that. Since I put nothing down they couldn't be sure what I was going for.
