go with firefly first. only 12 episodes. it's like uhhh. if han solo got his own tv show kinda. without lightsabers or the force and everyone had cool futuristic guns but still acted like cowboys and cussed in chinese.

The Wire...ehh some great seasons (1,3,5 if I remember correctly) but it is overhyped. This show is how Idris elba got famous though, lol a british man playing a baltimore gangsta.

fringe - I only seen like the first 2 seasons of fringe is it is too x-files-ey, it is pretty boring for the most part, i heard the 3rd season is the bomb though.

Six feet under lasted 1.5 more season than it should've but the last 10 minutes of the season finale almost had me in tears.

my recs

sci fi

Farscape - It seems like they gave it their all every episode, highly entertaining stuff.
Doctor Who - The David Tenant series, the absolute best doctor who has to offer, every episode was entertaining and epic.

crime-drama-thriller

Wire in the blood - a British crime show, totally dark, some truly psychotic stuff happening.

Hannibal - another crime show, based on Hannibal lector, very dark and entertaining.

Monster - its an anime but it could VERY easily be made into a live action show. There aren't any mechs or magic stuff on this show. You do have to suspend some disbelief because the main bad guy can manipulate people pretty easily, but it's what makes him so scary.
One of the best shows you can watch on television ever. About 70 twenty minute episodes that feel like 10 minutes.

First episode watched

Interestingly the pilot mostly focuses on a new character, and Lecter only turns up about a third of the way into the episode

Seems to have potential, although I'm not sure I'd have stuck with it as readily if my housemates hadn't raved about it so much

It's at least worth checking out. There's a small amount of cannibalism.

I don't mean small as in quantity of flesh, I meant small as in it only had brief clips of him preparing and eating his "cuisine"

will graham isn't really a new character, he is the main reason Hannibal got caught, so this series is basically somewhat of a prequel to silence of the lambs.

the main character of this show is also the main character in The Red Dragon novel/book.

if just hearing that freaks you out gore wise then this show isn't for you, there is some straight up artistic Gore-Art happening on this show.

Like literally, some murderers are making art out of their victims.

i think its more the jumping ahead and thinking whats going to happen next and its worst when its so obvious that you are driven mad because you know whats coming.

ummm kinda sorta, some surprises.

This isn't really a whodunit type show it is more of a atmospheric, dark, grim, psychotic show.

There are surprises but its not mind bending, it more of a "oh, okay, so he/she didn't/did do it."

Only Hannibal is eating people so far. Along with the unfortunate, unknowing guests he brings to his house. Hannibal isn't even an antagonist yet, he is just someone who helps Will figure out who the killer is.
