I got that, but why are there two conferences and what decides which one a team is in?

The National Conference of the NFL (NFC) is made up of teams from the original National Football League, going back to 1922. Therefore (including the 3 teams that switched conferences, see below) the oldest teams in pro football are all in the NFC.
The American Conference (AFC) is made up of teams from the original American Football League, an "upstart" football league created in 1960 to challenge the old NFL.
In 1967, the leagues merged, but because the NFL had 16 teams at the time, and the AFL only 10, 3 teams from the NFL moved to the AFC to make the conferences balance at 13-13. They were the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts.
Since then, new expansion teams have been arbitrarily added to both conferences that have no history or connection with either league, and the Seattle Seahawks transferred to the NFC from the AFC to again rebalance the two conferences. There are now 32 teams in the league, 16 in each conference.
got this from wiki answers lol

Why? Its just an organizational thing. The NFL tried to keep any long time division rivalries in tact. Usually new teams or ones that aren't doing so well are the ones moving around.

Should be a good game. 49ers often run the pistol offense which leads to big plays. The raven pretty much rely on their running game to open up the deep pass. But both defenses are rather physical. Teams are very similarity built just that Flacco is more of a pocket passer while Kaepernick is also a threat to run.

It's just not something we'd be used to here. Teams in football (soccer) here are divided into tiers but to have two equal divisions working side by side but separately is just odd. Most teams will never face each other even if they're of the same quality.

49ers are 4 point favorites. The way the games are scheduled rotate.

Quote:
Each team plays each of the other three teams in its division twice: once at home, and once on the road (six games).
Each team plays the four teams from another division within its own conference once on a rotating three-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
Each team plays the four teams from a division in the other conference once on a rotating four-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
Each team plays once against the other teams in its conference that finished in the same place in their own divisions as themselves in the previous season, not counting the division they were already scheduled to play: one at home, one on the road (two games).
So a team will play all 31 teams in a 4 year span. But yeah sometimes good teams don't face off but thats the point of the Super Bowl. Its what happens though since the season is only 16 games long. There will be streaks where one conference dominates the other. An NFC team has won the Super Bowl 4 of the last 5 times.

I dunno. I guess back in the 1880s when the game was evolving kicking was the predominate way to score. Obviously the game changed but the name stuck.
