Consoles, Gaming Tech in 2013
2013 is going to be the biggest year in gaming tech in a loong time, so it would probably be awesome to keep it all in one thread.
Consoles: Steambox - http://www.gamesradar.com/piston-revealed-first-steam-box/ Semi Console, Semi Linux computer. Can play steam games on your TV(Even though you can already do this) But with this you can take your steam games to your friends house and chill. You can hook this thing up right to the back of a monitor and start playing games with it. Ouya - http://www.gamespot.com/features/5-reasons-why-ouya-could-be-a-winner-and-5-why-it-wont-6386841/ Indie game console, only $99. Basically if indie developers wanted to put their games on console, it is friging expensive. with this Ouya, it will make putting your indie game on the TV much much cheaper. People wonder why console games don't get many updates, thats because its costs atleast $40,000 just to patch the game on the console. Ouya has been made to make it much much cheaper. Playstation 4 - Going to have a streaming service for games, like Onlive. Xbox 3 - ?? HandHelds: This year in handhelds is going to be about bring console-like games to a handheld device. Nvidia Shield - http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/01/09/ces-2013-hands-on-with-nvidias-shield-dead-trigger-2-hardware-overview-and-steam-integration-videos/ 5-inch Andriod based Windows tablet with touch screen shaped like an xbox 360 controller. Can stream your games from the PC to the device. Razor's Edge - http://techland.time.com/2013/01/10/razer-edge-hands-on-a-modular-tablet-for-pc-gamers/ 10.8 inch Windows tablet, can play Dishonored, Skyrim, battlefield 3, Guild wars 2 on medium at around 30fps, just to give you an idea on how powerful it is. I just don't know how anyone can justify 1300ish bucks on a portable gaming tablet that only gets 30 fps on Skyrim on medium. Just buy a laptop with an i5.

At the moment I can't afford a new generation of consoles, so I'm most looking forward to the swansong games of this generation, Bioshock Infinite and GTA 5 in particular

Yuuuuup, the perpetually frustrating life of a student. I'm considering buying a cheap PS3 so I can experience its exclusives before the next bunch of consoles roll around. Plus "The Last Of Us" looks incredible

I have zero interest in hand helds. The tech is interesting but...I'd rather just continue to upgrade my PC. I MAY buy the new Xbox when it comes out.

I think once I'm out of uni I might get into PC gaming, but at the moment consoles work best for me as they're generally a one-time purchase without the faffing around with upgrades etc. Ditto on the hand-helds though, not had one since my Gameboy

i dont think 2013 will be nearly the year its being hyped up to be for gaming
doubt steambox will be released earlier than 2014, ps4 and xbox wont be out until late 2013 both those handheld systems will crash and burn the only one of those that you listed im excited for is the ouya and that is just so i can actually develop android games without all the tablet/phone fragmentation to worry about what i am really looking forward too is in 2-3 years when people start to release cool things for the oculus rift and android processors can actually compete with consoles in the graphics department |

I can't wait for PC games to stop being nerfed because they have to port to/from outdated X-Box tech.

I unno, console like games on the go is kind of an untapped market, could be big, so the first company who can successfully do it will get a huge reward.
Kind of like when the Ipod came out, who the heck would want a 10+ gb mp3 player for 100s of bucks? Now look at it. It ultimately going to depend on their marketing/advertising team. Also Went to the atlanta game dev meetup today and I think the head of Ouya Inc or a very high up representative was there to showcase/answer questions about it. I also played sonic the hedgehog 4 on it. |

maybe platformers are good for handhelds but i can't play rpg, fps or sports on them at all. its like its all happening on a little camera on the world and makes the game seem claustrophobic in a bad way because the device gives no depth to the experience in sounds or vision
