Of course the trailer makes it seem like the LOTR movies....its called MARKETING! You want fans of the movies who haven't read the Hobbit to go see it.

Now, I hope the actual movie is light hearted like the book was.

There is no way you could make a decent hobbit movie in just one go. A lot of scenes get brushed over in the book in a fashion that would not be viable on screen, like the massive battle near the end.
The Hobbit itself is also a fair bit less descriptive then LOTR as it was written for his children initially. This means a lot of the scenes that take up a couple of pages will take much more time to flesh out on screen.

a scene that takes a couple of pages in the book could be conveyed in about three seconds on screen.

read it after lotr

strange to be seeing it in the movies after lotr

i expect it will put a lot in lotr in perspective

but if lotr was as removed from the books as what people feel then surely the hobbit wil take us even further down that path

can't wait though

Hopefully he doesn't try to do the Silmarillion. That would be almost unshootable.

As a whole, yes, that would be absurd, but if you could expand on a single one of the stories in there

3 movies is a good idea. It might be a littttle bit too much, especially if the rumours are true that Jackson wants to add in his own story halfway between Hobbit and LOTR to tie the two movie franchises together, I don't know if I want him diluting the material further with his own additions. I love the way he adapted LOTR, don't get me wrong, some changes made sense to make it workable on screen, but a whole new segment from his head, I don't know.

People who say each LOTR book got a movie, and thus the Hobbit should get one movie, are being over simplistic. Look at the amount of changes made to the books to fit them into one feature each. Look at the amount of material scrapped altogether, entire characters that are pretty important to the universe and story, just completely cut from the pages. Now imagine The Hobbit having three movies and actually not having to make such drastic cuts. We might actually get the full story.

The lay of Beren and Luthien as well as the children of Hurin are both very possible. Both stories are pretty fleshed out.
