The production is consistently competent but not much better. The beginning is more cinematic and dramatic, by the end the beats have become pleasantly nostalgic. Some good feelings going on but not memorable enough for me to compliment the beats too much.

In terms of rapping, I just wish he wouldn't be so conscious that he peaked 15 years ago. Too many times he goes after the fire of a young rapper, because while he still has some and is still a good rapper, it doesn't sound natural, comfortable. My favorites are the grown man rap songs, where he's okay with being nearly 40. I like the idea of a song like Daughters, where the guy who used to have dreams of being a gangster (drinkin Moet, holdin tecs) is now concerned about his daughter being sexually active, leaving his protection.

It's a solid album, at least on first listen, but the conflict between chasing the fire of youth and being content with aging makes the album's message seem fragmented (though that could be the point). It's decently enjoyable all the way through with two consecutive shit tracks being forgiven.

I kinda like the fact that there's grown up songs mixed with less mature ones, but I can understand how you don't.
