african drumming - djembe
Part of my day job for the last 5 years has been to teach african drums to classes of (30) pupils between the ages of 9 and 12 +/-.
I have shot these three videos to summarise what we do in a year (30 x 45 minutes) of weekly lessons. iI know some of the patterns have been simplified somewhat but the course has to suit whole classes of all abilities and engage them, leaving none behind. This is quite tricky but loads of fun. Does anybody else here do something similar? http://youtu.be/4YEInwHvZPw http://youtu.be/CCQKzpfuqmc http://youtu.be/pRsmWQ_BseU Any one else a player? j |

That looks super fun!! What a great job!
I occasionally blow the local hippies away with what's called a "paradiddle"... No official ethnic studies in the area. However I do oversee/teach local high school and college drum lines. Pit percussion being about the limit of any of that. |

Hey, if you like the African music, check out Habib Koite, I learned about him through 'Det Nospip' on here a while back, African music, but still westernized a bit, good stuff, and possibly good for your students

I want a tabla! I have put a lot of research in it, and I think it's my next investment

Djembe was the first thing I learned to play, and I recognized a lot of those beats, though some I know with different names.
Haven't played much in a while but I just discovered a friend of mine hosts a drum circle every week that I'm going to start going to. |
