Anything to recommend for someone who's looking to check anime out for the first time?

Yes. Normally, I would say read the manga, but Akagi is great as an anime. Madhouse studios almost always does the best manga adaptations in my opinion. The music is great and so is the voice acting.

Triad, the sub group also has notes about mahjong that explain what is going on. This show is what got me interested in mahjong and where I learned the basics. Keep in mind though that Akagi is supposed to be a genius with incredible luck so some of his tactics are not really feasible in regular play. i would highly recommend it though, it's one of my favorites and I've seen a lot of anime.

ya well the writers can cheat when it comes to luck of the draw type games. Lets see them make a Chess version of Akagi, good luck with that. Going to have Chess geniuses saying, "well I saw that coming 10 minutes ago".

Watch Monster, Neon Genesis Evangelion and I'd also go with Cowboy Bebop.

I couldn't finish NGE, Shinji made me want to slit my wrists. Also Monster is like 70 episodes, a great anime but a big investment for your first one.

Cowboy Bebop, in English, is the best intro to anime IMO.

thank god shinji makes you want to slit your wrists, although his effect on future beta protagonists in anime kind of makes me almost wish nge wouldnt have been as popular.

Gantz is pretty crappy. It had so much promise but really just left me dissatisfied.

ya i think i posted this before, but i saw one random gantz episode and it consisted of of 5 gantz people standing in one spot for 10 minutes talking amongst eachother while there was like 2 people beating up on the old man on a street, talking about what they should do.

Like srsly.
