Yeah I like to read a lot and I write here and there. I usually go running if I want to blow off steam.

I'll be fine I just get in these moods sometimes over her.

I love my friends, that suffices for now.
Some days it sucks, but most days I really just don't have time to have another commitment in my life.

So my friend Terra is a atheist, and her family is sort of kind of religious. Her grandfather is dying slowly and painfully. Her family asks her to pray for him, and she tells them no.

am I wrong to feel like she is being too selfish? I am an atheist but idk something about her saying no in this circumstance makes me sort of angry

I wouldn't pray given the same situation. At least, that's what my gut tells me. However, none of my family are (or were) religious.

I can see where you're coming from, Ron, and I suppose I may have been inclined to think differently had any of my grandparents been religious, but I would like to think they'd have been wise enough to see that an insincere prayer is of the same worth as no prayer at all, and that my support, whatever form it took, would be welcome.

I am a very staunch atheist myself and I agree that was pretty out of line on her part. You have to learn to pick and choose fights, and in a moment of weakness, such as a loved one's death, that's not the time.

I mean, perhaps not even pray, but just tell them you would. Yeah yeah it is lying but at least you're not coming off as selfish (in my eyes).

idk she is one of those atheists that thinks all religious people are dumb on a certain level which I disagree with.

Ah, I see. I was under the impression you meant visibly, together, in that moment have a little pray.

I dunno, still seems like kind of a dick move on the family's part. It wasn't the grandfather who asked, so it's not a dying mans wish, and the family know she's an atheist, but ask her to pray? What, they figure a loved ones death will provoke some doubt in her life choice, or do they really think one more prayer, even from an unbeliever, is the difference between limbo and getting to the other side of the pearly gates?

I just about fall into that camp. It's not that they're stupid as such, I just don't see any reason to believe in a higher power, and find it difficult to square belief in one with rational thought. Then again, I would think that - I'm an atheist.
