If you took baby Hitler and locked him in a closet until he was 12 years old would he have the personality of an outgoing guy who wanted to kill all the jews? Fuck no

its learned behaviour. mannerisms and traits can reflect a parent or grandparent and when someone has similar physical appearance then its very common to hear "you're just like your dad" or something like that.

its definitely learned. A lot of people say that my son makes faces and does things like me.

he's 1 1/2 and not my biological child so go figure.

How much of personality is inherited? How much of personality is not inherited? I was trying to come up with an answer the other day, but ended up coming up "short"! Any input would be appreciated - any perspectives, insight, ideological perspectives, theoretical insights - it all would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch guys.

I know this post is very old, but I just want to say because we grew up with our parents throughout our lives, some of your personality traits can be inherited from them. Even if that's the case, it's down to us whether we want some or all of our traits to be influenced by our folks, although some or all of our qualities may be created through genetic mental disorders such as schizophrenia.

The first article above stated although our personality traits are mostly affected by the combination of genetic and environmental factors, we are still able to choose whether to carry out one personality trait around everyone (Nomotetic approaches); whether to have different personality traits around different people (Idiographic approaches); OR have a combination of two approaches. However, this article may not apply to those with mental illnesses.

Even though environmental factors could trigger the mental illnesses AND certain personality traits, mentally disabled people are more likely to inherit them from any of their family members - more so than those who have no mental health issues or whose family members don't have any.

Yes, definitely up-to some extent personality is inherited like property. You cannot depend 100% on this, but yes it depends at-least a little that is the reason you may see some children's face similar to their parents or hair or something and all this is only because of inheritance.

I think personality can be influenced by those around us and how we grow up, but our personality comes from how we react to those influences. Mostly, people don't react against those around them, so those they are surrounded by influence/create their personality. But you can react against those around you and define your own personality / change who you are around so you get your personality influenced the way you want it to.

That's my views on it anyway

A thoughtful and well-researched response. Please don't end your future papers on the word "any."

And to be told my opinion doesn't matter by someone who's name rhymes with twig? So tell me Twig, why does your opinion matter so much more than mine?
