New Suggestions Thread

The old thread was getting way too large for me to go through on a consistent basis.

The new policy is:

If I like your suggestion and am amenable to adding it, I'll edit this first post and place a list of (possible) upcoming changes to the site here. This way you can know what I've seen and added to the list.

If I don't like the suggestion or it is not practical, I will try to respond. But due to volume, I may not be able to reply to every post.

Note that whether I accept the suggestion depends on two things:

- My own judgment of its utility
- The relative gain for the site versus the effort it will take to implement

not really a huge upside to this but, maybe instead of just bumping up soundoffs, we could have a 'thumbs-up, thumbs-down' sort of thing whereby users could vote up and vote down individual soundoffs as they please.

I understand there may be some concern about trolling down certain soundoffs/users, but under the current system, an extremely unpopular soundoff just gets mocked, usually leading to like 5 more unfunny, off-topic soundoffs...

I also think there's a chance that this would dissuade users from logging into alt accounts to bump their own, presumably unworthy, soundoffs to the top... (since I believe more people would use a re-vamped bump-up/bump-down function, and therefore their login/logout efforts would be easily negated... or maybe it would amplified... tough to say with this crowd... but yeah, it would be interesting to see...)

Not sure how this would change troll voting at all. If anything, it adds more incentive to troll because you can move posts in both directions.

Yea, I agree that this is a foreseeable issue, but I think there's a possibility that it works out differently.

In theory, users write soundoffs for other users to read. These readers may be drawn to the soundoff/ratings page by a user whose soundoff he would like to read (either by clicking through in a review thread or from the front page list). The problem is that for albums with many soundoffs (maybe older albums or extremely popular albums or extremely polarizing albums or albums by avenged sevenfold) there will be a huge bubble of zero-to-one-to-two bumps that a new soundoff gets lumped in with. If you click through from a review, you have the problem of sifting through these to find the soundoff you're looking for (frontpage soundoffs you can search for by date but this still looks really ugly)... (Also the username + author name is usually different, which makes this even more annoying, but I guess that's for another suggestion reply).

I think that an updated soundoff system would prompt more users to visit the page and use the voting function (if only at first, because of the nature of users to experiment with site changes). Theoretically, more people voting means fewer bubbles, and a (slightly (perhaps very slightly) more legitimate) ranking emerges.

Additionally, this (assumed) higher volume of soundoff voting means that the general userbase can erase the time-consuming login/logout with a few quick clicks, which should dissuade trolls. We see the site's compass direct these types of votes all the time… for every undeserved neg on a well-intentioned review, three users pos to balance it out. The more users who feel inclined to read and vote honestly, the less power alt voting has.

While I'm wasting my time writing this, I might as well include the few other things that this could fix. Firstly, newer soundoffs will have a chance to approach those untouchable channing soundoffs from like, a decade ago. Secondly, a re-vamped system gives people an incentive to actually write soundoffs as they were intended (idea that other users are actually reading them + voting on them), not just coming up with a snarky/retarded fragments + 25 spaces (see, e.g., any of my soundoffs). Thirdly, while you're playing around with it, you could throw a 'report this soundoff' button on there...

Basically, troll-bumping is happening anyway, and it's not like this system would require significantly more mod attention... This could produce some nice changes. Or it could just be a waste of time. Idk. Also f**k robertsona.

I submitted this a while back, in the old thread, but morrissey seemed to like the idea. It doesn't seem too hard to implement. So I figured what the hell.

I've noticed the addition of being able to see all artists listed by their starting letter. It's a really nice feature, but I was thinking you could perhaps add the ability to see artists that start with numbers into the list (bands like 65daysofstatic, 311, etc.).

I've always really hated the ...s on the features and staff reviews on the main page. I get that they're there to imply there's more to read but, I dunno, just clutters things, and it should be fairly obvious that a review is hiding behind the link anyway haha.

Wow I care about the stupidest things.

...and when it's a long summary it gets cut off (usually at very awkward places), so I also agree with knott.

Or be able to bump down a soundoff and these soundoffs would appear at the bottom of the page. So that people don't seem like a**holes reporting stupid soundoffs.
"LOL" is NOT a soundoff! even if it's done by a staff member

A long time ago, the main genre links at the top of the review page used to have a drop down with a few subgenres. As far as I know, the only way to get to subgenre pages is to go to a profile and click on the subgenre from a pie chart. It works, but it's not the most efficient way to get to a sub you want to find.

Maybe implementing that old drop down thing again or something like it would be good. I don't use the tabs as they are now, but I would get use out of a few subgenres.

If there is another way currently that I don't know about, just disregard this, I guess, unless the idea has substance beyond that.

This may be more work for the site developers than it is actually worth, but I have a suggestion concerning album searches.

Can we have one of those search aspects where the album comes up as you are typing it in, then you can just click on it (like how facebook has your friends come up as you type in their name)? I feel this would make searches more user friendly not just in general, but especially when making lists. This way by the time you type in f#, you can just click on F#A# (infinity) and the list will automatically link it to the album.

Could you guys implement a script or plugin or whatever to automatically unban users at thier scheduled unbanning time? Like a Control Panel thing where you enter the user name and ban length. I know most forums have this but Sputnik seems to do thier unbanning manually.

For the reviews on the front page, would it be possible to show 1/2 stars? Because if you rate something as 1.5, it shows up as 1, 2.5 shows up as 2, etc. Just seems like a simple change to make the front page more accurate.

This may be an odd suggestion, but a personalized 'bands to look out for/bands I want to listen to' list that a user could edit in their profiles might be nifty.
